September 5th to 12th is Fibromyalgia Awareness Week.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is characterized by widespread pain, tenderness, fatigue, and often other symptoms like sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties and mood issues. While the exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, it is believed to involve a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors.

Fibromyalgia is a complex and often challenging condition to treat, as its symptoms can vary widely among individuals and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The goal of treatment is generally to manage and alleviate symptoms, improve quality of life, and help individuals regain function. Here are some common approaches and treatments used for fibromyalgia:

1). Exercise: Regular low-impact aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming, or cycling, can help improve symptoms and overall well-being. Gradual progression is important to avoid exacerbating pain.

2). Stress Management: Stress reduction techniques, such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, can help manage pain and improve sleep.

3). Sleep Hygiene: Establishing good sleep habits can help improve sleep quality, which is often disrupted in fibromyalgia.

4). Acupuncture: Some people find relief from fibromyalgia symptoms through acupuncture, which involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body.

5). Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic adjustments and manipulation may help alleviate pain and improve mobility for some individuals.

6). Herbal Supplements: While evidence is limited, some people try herbal supplements such as turmeric, ginger, and omega-3 fatty acids for their anti-inflammatory properties.

7). Diet and Nutrition: While there is no specific diet for fibromyalgia, maintaining a balanced diet with whole foods, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables can contribute to overall well-being.

Arthritis isn't just one disease; it's a term used to describe a variety of joint disorders causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation.

Arthritis impacts not only physical health but emotional well-being too. The pain and limitations can be daunting, affecting daily activities and quality of life.

Some tips and treatments that can help manage arthritis:

1. Regular adjustments: Keeps the spine and other joints mobile and moving the way they're supposed to.

2. Regular exercise: exercise can help improve joint flexibility, reduce pain, and strengthen muscles around the affected joints. Low-impact activities like swimming, walking, and yoga are generally well-tolerated by arthritis patients.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can put additional stress on your joints, worsening arthritis symptoms.

4. Balanced Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help reduce inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are particularly beneficial.

5. Joint Protection: Learning proper techniques for joint-friendly activities and avoiding repetitive movements that strain your joints can reduce the risk of worsening symptoms.

6. Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate arthritis symptoms. Practices like deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness can help manage stress and improve overall well-being.

7. Acupuncture: Some people find relief from arthritis pain through acupuncture.

8. Herbal Supplements: Some herbs like turmeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory properties and might offer relief.

Remember, arthritis management is individualized, and what works for one person might not work for another. It's essential to work closely with a healthcare professional to develop a comprehensive plan tailored to your specific needs and condition.

At Bayview North Family Chiropractic we focus on restoring mobility and making your activities of daily living that much easier.

National PTSD Awareness Day is celebrated annually on June 27.

It aims to raise awareness of posttraumatic stress disorder, a mental health problem that may develop after a person has been exposed to one or more traumatic events.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. It causes intense fear, helplessness or horror. It is described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), published by the American Psychiatric Association. The symptoms of PTSD often surface within three months of the traumatic event that caused it but can also surface years later.

Despite the prevalence of brain injury in Canada, it is difficult to gather accurate statistics on a regular basis because we rely on hospital and doctor reporting.

Many brain injuries are not actually reported at the time of injury (or at all), which impacts the statistics.

A key part of Brain Injury Canada’s advocacy plans is to bring more attention to brain injury, its impact, and the need for more up to date information.

May 30 is World MS Day.

Canada remains at the forefront of MS research around the world. Through generous contributions from donors, corporate sponsors, and fervent fundraisers, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada has invested over $190 million dollars in research since its inception in 1948. This investment has led to significant results for people affected by MS. More specifically, MS Society funded studies have gone the distance in areas such as imaging, diagnosis, genetics, tissue repair, rehabilitation, and disease-modifying therapies. With each passing year research continues to reveal new knowledge around the cause of MS, as well as the mechanism by which MS impacts the central nervous system.

Although much progress has been made, many questions regarding MS remain unanswered. As a result, Canadian researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds and expertise are turning their attention to MS and working together to uncover important knowledge and develop treatments that will effectively manage symptoms and slow progression. To ensure that momentum in MS research continues, the MS Society administers an annual research competition that provides support for researchers whether they are in the early stages of graduate school or conducting research as independent investigator. Funding researchers across the academic and clinical spectrum enables education and training for the next generation of MS leaders, while reinforcing their passion for the field.

In addition to supporting research, the MS Society engages young researchers in education and training programs, mentorship initiatives, and networking opportunities which aim to stimulate interest in MS research and encourage collaboration amongst the future generation of MS experts.

Your dedication and support have connected and empowered the MS community to bring us a step closer to a world free of MS.

Naturopathic medicine is a primary healthcare system that addresses the root cause of disease and promotes healing through the use of natural non-invasive therapies. These include clinical nutrition, lifestyle counselling, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, botanical medicine and physical therapies. There are 6 principles that guide how naturopathic doctors practice:

1) Do no harm - we aim to choose the most effective and safest treatment for each patient that is appropriate for the progression of their illness.

2) The Healing Power of Nature - we recognize the body's innate ability to heal itself and aim to support it.

3) Identify and treat the root cause - instead of providing patients with a temporary solution for their health concerns.

4) Treat the whole person - disease doesn't just affect 1 organ, but the whole person, which is why we must treat holistically.

5) Doctor as teacher - our role is to teach our patients about their bodies and empower them to make changes to better their health.

6) Prevention - through nutrition, lifestyle counselling and other interventions, naturopathic doctors help to prevent future diseases in patients.

05/10/2023

May is Ankylosing Spondylitis Awareness Month.

With AS inflammation, the immune attack targets the ligaments and tendons attached to bone in the joints of the spine. The bone erodes at these sites and the body tries to repair itself by forming new bone. The bones of the spine begin to fuse, or grow together, causing the spine to become stiff, inflexible and painful. Even though new bone forms, the original bone in the spine can become thin, increasing the risk of spinal fractures.

Ankylosing spondylitis is the most common form of a group of inflammatory arthritis called spondyloarthritis. These diseases are related clinically and genetically, but have distinct features from one another. They are grouped into two broad categories: axial spondyloarthritis – diseases affecting the spine, such as ankylosing spondylitis, and peripheral spondyloarthritis – diseases that affect other parts of the body such as the fingers, arm and leg joints. In some cases, these axial and peripheral symptoms can overlap. Additional symptoms outside the joints can include inflammation in the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the eyes.

Spondyloarthritis diseases are different from other inflammatory forms of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis in the joints that are affected, and the age of onset. People with spondyloarthritis do not have high titre (concentration) rheumatoid factor antibodies in their blood: they are known as seronegative, whereas people with rheumatoid arthritis can have high or low titre rheumatoid factor antibodies. Seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (with negative rheumatoid factor) is possible and should not be confused with spondyloarthritis. At the same time, having low titre rheumatoid factor antibodies does not exclude spondyloarthritis.

Heart failure (HF) awareness continues to rise across Canada and throughout the world as more and more people are living with HF.

The goal of Heart Failure Awareness Week is to raise awareness, increase public knowledge and provide a better understanding of this chronic condition.

In addition to engaging health care providers in raising awareness among patients and their families, this year’s campaign will target the general public with the message: It’s Not Normal to be Breathless. We encourage people to see their health care provider if they suspect they have HF symptoms.

👨🏻‍⚕️Hi!

I'm Dr. Michael Iuliano, Chiropractor and owner of Bayview North Family Chiropractic.
I first started my journey when I graduated from York University with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and Health Science degree. I later completed a rigorous 3 1⁄2 year program at New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, NY and graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic. I'm a member of the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, Ontario Chiropractic Association and Canadian Chiropractic Association.

From a young age, I aspired to work in the healthcare field and was determined to help my community live their best life possible. After graduating from University, I had the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary office, along side Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists and Acupuncturists. While working there, it sparked my interest in the field of Chiropractic and I moved temporarily to New York to complete that goal.
While obtaining my doctorate in chiropractic, I became interested in nutrition and wanted to complement the two disciplines, and went on to complete my Masters of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition at New York Chiropractic College. After graduating, I worked in a busy clinic in Syracuse, NY, where I gained valuable experience I use each day with each of my patients.

👩🏻‍⚕️Hi!

I'm Dr. Beatrice, BNFC's newest naturopathic doctor! I love helping my patients get to the bottom of their health concerns and work together with them to meet their health goals. As a naturopathic doctor, the many "tools in my toolkit" allow me to address a health concern from a variety of perspectives. These include diet and lifestyle counselling, botanical medicine, nutritional supplementation, cupping, hydrotherapy and my personal favourite, acupuncture.

While women's health and hormones is my passion, I also help those with digestive concerns, pain, fatigue and stress.
