Today is World Mental Health Day!

Today is a truly ♥️ special day for us at Chimo.
👉We are always working to uplift people’s mental health. Many in our community can be struggling, often unnoticed.

🤝Remember - asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Let's break the stigma and get everyone the support they need.

All of our programs have one goal in mind: to improve people's mental health through offering services that help them process emotions, find shelter, access support, and feel more settled in their communities.

This we want to give a huge 🙌 thank you to everyone who makes this possible - from our staff, volunteers, to our community donors and supporters.

Over 20% of Canadians in any given year will experience mental health concerns, only a third of those people will seek help or treatment. (Source: Statistics Canada)

Why might people not seek treatment?

🌍External stigma: they might fear judgement from friends, family, their work, and others, and this can also vary based on their cultural background

🚧Barriers to access: support might not be available in their area, lack of access to digital support, with finances, transportation, and wait times also being possible barriers

👉Not seeking help: they may believe they can solve their issues independently, or are unaware that they need to seek help at all

“Over half of struggling Canadians are not getting the mental health support they need."

From systematic reasons, such as underfunded support services, to personal reasons, such as fear of seeking help, we know many in our community aren’t getting the help they need. We encourage everyone to get involved – follow and support organizations providing mental health support, volunteer, and raise awareness by sharing these posts on your social media.

Happy Canadian Islamic History Month from the team at Chimo Community Services!

This October we reflect, celebrate, learn, and appreciate the diversity within Canada’s Muslim communities.

Did you know that the first recorded presence of Muslim communities in Canada dates back to the 1860s? Islam is now considered to be the most declared religion after Christianity, with flourishing and diverse communities across Canada.

Learn more about this month at www.islamichistorymonth.ca and at the link in our bio for educational resources put together by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion.

Today, we come together to remember the children who never made it home from residential schools, and to honour the Survivors, their families, and their communities. This day is about truth, healing, and walking the path of reconciliation together.

🟠 We also invite you to wear orange today, to recognize the deep impacts of residential schools across generations. The orange shirt reminds us that Every Child Matters!
