The Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada (CMWAC) works to provide mental health education to Canadians. The association offers a wide range of supportive and referral services such as counseling, advocacy, and support to mental health consumers and their families. The CMWAC also focuses on building support networks where people can share their experiences and have a nurturing environment that promotes recovery and well-being. Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and a clear mission, the CMWAC aspires to reduce social stigma associated with mental illness by educating the community about mental health issues. The CMWAC provides services to over 300 members in Richmond and Vancouver and has provided services to over 700 people since it was founded in 1995. Some of the services provided by our organization include seminars on how to improve communication skills, bolster self-esteem, educational programs tailored to those experiencing depression, anxiety as well as extreme stress, community independence programs, and elderly services. The CMWAC is headed by a volunteer board of eight directors which consists of clinical psychologists, general practitioners, peer support counselors. By educating the community about mental health and providing valuable life skills to those with the greatest need, the CMWAC is taking long strides toward dispelling the social stigma associated with addressing mental illness and promoting mental wellness.
