Are you familiar with the term Pes Planus?

Pes Planus—aka flatfoot—is a condition where the arch of the foot collapses or is lower than normal, causing your entire sole to come closer to the ground.

This altered alignment can shift how your body distributes weight and absorb shock, often leading to pain or instability over time. It’s one of the most common foot postures we see as pedorthists, and in some cases, it can lead to many issues up the kinetic chain including:

 👉 Plantar Fasciitis
 👉 Osteoarthritis
 👉 Nerve impingements
 👉 Heel pain
 👉 Low back pain

If you have flat feet and you’re noticing discomfort or postural changes, a pedorthist can help. We design custom orthotics to support your arches, improve alignment, and reduce strain on your joints. Book an appointment with the West Coast Pedorthics team today!

Let’s talk Pes Cavus—aka high arches 👣

Pes Cavus is a foot condition where the arch of the foot is higher than normal, causing your weight to be unevenly distributed—mainly landing on the ball and heel of your foot. Unlike flat feet (Pes Planus), high arches can lead to added stress on your midfoot and toes.

It affects only about 10% of the population, but it can cause a number of painful issues, such as:

👉 Hammertoes or claw toes
👉 Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (shin splints)
👉 Metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot)
👉 Ankle instability or chronic ankle pain
👉 Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)

If you have high arches and you’re dealing with pain or balance issues, it’s worth seeing a pedorthist. We can design custom orthotics to cushion your foot, redistribute pressure, and improve alignment. Book an appointment with our team today!

Summer is right around the corner, and many of us are starting to get our warm weather wardrobes ready, including summer sandals.

If you’re starting to shop for sandals, here are a few tips to consider to keep your feet comfortable and supported all season long:

👉 Choose sandals that fit like your favourite lace-up shoes
👉 Look for adjustable velcro straps over the top for a secure fit and a back heel strap for extra stability
👉 Skip flip-flops for extended wear
👉 Opt for sandals with a stiff bottom and built-in arch support to keep your feet happy

Did you know that orthotics are adjustable?

Part of what you pay for in a custom product is the ability to adjust it. We provide adjustments and appointments related to the products we build at no charge for the first year after creating your orthotics.

If you’re feeling as though your orthotics are not working for you as well as they could, our pedorthists can help! There are many adjustment options to optimize comfort and reduce pain, and sometimes minor adjustments can make all the difference in the success of the orthoses.

The warmer weather is around the corner, which means many people are getting into a new sport or increasing their exercise and activity levels. If you’re ramping up your exercise routine, remember to take precautions to prevent issues from occurring, such as shin splints.

Shin splints are an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and connective tissue around your tibia, and they usually develop after overuse or an increase in physical activity. Here are 4 tips to help prevent shin splints from occurring:

✔️ Choose supportive footwear
✔️ Incorporate stretching into your routine
✔️ Ease into increasing training + listen to your body
✔️ Consider custom orthotics

Questions about shin splints, or how a pedorthist can support? Visit our website, or send us a message for more information!

Wondering what comes next after your pedorthist assessment? 🤔

Once our team completes a detailed assessment—including a health history review, gait analysis, and biomechanical exam—we’ll provide you with a personalized evaluation and treatment plan.

From there, we’ll identify the potential root causes of any discomfort, whether it’s related to foot structure, alignment, or other factors. Based on your needs, we’ll recommend foot orthotics, footwear adjustments, or even refer you to other healthcare professionals to help you feel your best.

We’re here to guide you every step of the way! 👣
