A sweet moment when two kids, one starting her session and one finishing his session, decided to form their own little social group in our open space.

They were setting up the game together, taking turns and trading toys while our SLPs (Jessie & Ali) nearby were modelling language and supporting their social interaction for them!

Happy Thursday! 🥰

Our second series of the Cantonese Autism Family Circle started on Tuesday.

The presentation centered on parents’ expectations and the important factors to consider when selecting therapy goals that support each child’s development.

It is so heartwarming to see how reflective these parents are, and how their sharing and experiences support one another in a safe space like this.

Parents don’t have to walk this journey alone.

Thank you Sandy (SLP) for leading the presentation, and Emily (SLP) for taking down important questions and notes from the meeting so we can continue gathering insights on how we can better support our families. ❤️

‼️ Strong language skills do not remove the need for support in the daily realities autistic teens face.‼️

Last week, Speech Meta was invited to do a workshop at CCM on supporting autistic teens in their friendship journeys. We previously shared this workshop in Cantonese, and it was meaningful to offer it again in Mandarin so more families could access the conversation.

We explored neurodiversity, masking, the double empathy problem, and practical tools therapists use to support teens in understanding themselves, navigating relationships, and advocating for their needs. Parents were encouraged to move away from a linear way of describing autism and their child’s needs, recognizing that each teen has a unique profile of strengths and support needs that may evolve over time.

Although these topics are widely discussed in the broader community, we are often reminded that they do not always reach families whose first language is not English.

Some parents shared that today was the first time they were beginning to understand autism. Through their stories, we also heard concerns about the daily challenges their teens face, even when their teens have strong language skills.

At a time when many autistic clients and families are navigating uncertainty and advocating for their children after the recent announcement of funding changes, today was a powerful reminder that autistic teens and all children with disabilities benefit from understanding, connection, and direct and meaningful supports as they grow, as needs emerge or change across different stages of development.

When families feel informed and empowered to speak up for what their children need, teens are better able to understand themselves, advocate for their needs, build relationships, and thrive.

We are grateful to walk alongside them. 💛

This past Tuesday, we wrapped up the first series of our Cantonese parent support group at Speech Meta!

We explored topics such as redefining autism, neurodiversity, masking, disclosure, as well as how to identify each child’s strengths and better understand their individual needs.

Parents also shared how meaningful it was to learn about different topics, participate in the activities and connect with others who have similar experiences. After each session, families stayed behind to chat, exchange stories, and offer one another support.

In just three sessions, we witnessed a noticeable shift in parents’ understanding, confidence, and sense of community. We’re now in the process of planning our next series! If you are a Speech Meta client and would like to join our free Cantonese support group, please DM us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Lastly, a big thank you to Sandy, Jacqueline, Emily, June, Fiona and our admin team for making this group happen! ❤️

Brain Power Run Club Season 1 Track Meet = pure magic on the track today. 🏅✨

We started this as a fun way to build a social group that gets kids moving. The heart of it? Growth mindset, teamwork, and collaborative, supportive communication between friends.

Our Season 1 Track Meet brought it all together:

400m
Relay
Long jump
Then the medal ceremony (the best part 😭🥹).

We are so incredibly proud of these kids for their hard work, dedication, and showing up for each other. You cheered, supported, tried again after setbacks, and talked about your learning like the little leaders you are.

And to our volunteers… we couldn’t do this without you. Your energy, patience, cheers, and belief in every child didn’t go unnoticed🌟🙏

Movement brought us together, mindset and friendship kept us here. On to Season 2. 💙🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️✨
