ᒪᐢᑭᐦᑭᕀ maskihkiy wellness Cree (y)for medicine, maskihkiy supports holistic wellness through Indigenous and land-based approaches. you are the medicine 💞🌱✨

maskihkiy provides counselling, land-based healing programs, consulting, workshops, & kihtehayak (Elders) services. our kihtehayah (Elder) Wiisug Richard Wright (Leech Lake Anishinaabe) taught us that medicine is anything that helps a person to heal and live a good life. our team uses both traditional and contemporary Indigenous and land-based approaches to holistic wellness to support individuals, families, communities, and organizations in miyo pimâtisiwin (living a good life). we do this through consultation and workshops that incorporate Indigenous pedagogies and experiential learning. each team member brings unique strengths and gifts, including expertise in Indigenous approaches to counselling and trauma work, decolonizing and Indigenizing organizations including strategic planning and program evaluation, reconciliation initiatives and cultural education, and holistic nutrition. maskihkiy wellness is based out of Calgary, Alberta. our team is available to travel both nationally and internationally.

time in nature (and with one another) is always healing ❤️

we had an incredible time at our 3-day workshop and retreat: “land-based tools for trauma, grief, and transformation” at Lazy M Lodge 🌿

from great meals and discussions around the fire, to learning about plant medicines and laughing together, participants got to explore iyiniwak approaches to healing grief and trauma while tending to their own wellness. thank you to everyone who joined us, we have so much more to share from the weekend still so stay tuned.

colonization continues to create barriers to Indigenous people's wellness.

it's pervasive in our child welfare systems, the justice system, education, the language we use, ongoing occupation of Indigenous lands and environmental destruction, and the continued dominance of the development narrative, which marginalizes Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.

we can’t build systems of care without first undoing the harm baked into the ones we inherited. healing begins when our iyiniwak ways are centred. THIS is the work, and we are committed to it ✊ (Fellner, 2016)

we are all one people, despite nations being forced apart on either side of the medicine line (US/Canada border) & the southern borders of the US.

we are still here. we are over 1200 Nations strong.

a few weeks ago, I was honoured to lead the “decolonizing supervision & practice: Iyiniwak wisdoms for wellness” workshop (co-sponsored by Psychologists' Association of Alberta at University of Alberta with the help of owiyasiwêw Lisa L'Hirondelle. 🪶✨

it was an incredible opportunity to articulate what decolonizing means in the context of psychological & supervisory practice, to help enhance awareness among psychologists, and introduce them to some basic land-based tools.

fun fact: I received my bachelor's and master's degrees at the U of A! it was so deeply lovely to be back and connect with old colleagues, including one of my earliest clinical supervisors and mentors, Dr. Steve Knish.

workshops like these are a big part of what we do! if you are interested in learning more about the professional development services maskihkiy offers, please email info@maskihkiy.com.

🌕 episode 04 – “so addiction’s about finding the right medicine, not just kicking it?”

I sat down with kihtehayah and author Wiisug Richard Wright to discuss some iyiniwak Indigenous views on addiction. instead of seeing addiction as disease, we discuss relationships with the spirits of substances—turning away from those that are harmful & toward those that strengthen us in good ways—the practices and people that promote vitality and individual, collective, and generational wellness.
