This one was a big deal for me. This episode of Unlonely - friends - the badass, nationally recognized as one of the top business leaders in Canada, Arlene Dickinson is the Founder and General Partner of District Ventures Capital. She was the iconic Dragon on the award-winning show Dragons’ Den for 15 seasons – making her the longest running female Dragon in the show’s history. She is also a three-time best-selling author and a seasoned public speaker, frequently travelling the country to speak and inspire teams, students and leaders.

Arlene immigrated to Canada with her family at age three, arriving with few belongings but full of hope and excitement at the prospect of a new life. Deeply influenced by the curiosity and gratitude that her father, a teacher, displayed towards their adopted country, Arlene set out to make the most of the opportunity. While working at a TV station, Arlene was introduced to world of marketing, and quickly fell in love. While raising four kids, she climbed up the ladder, eventually owning and running her own business. Arlene now sits on many public and private boards and is highly active in community organizations, with an enduring passion for health, food and beverage and women in business. She is deeply involved in various charities and foundations and has made a priority of giving back to the communities and the country that afforded her the opportunity to have such an incredible life and career.

I get asked this often: does it always come back to your childhood?

This simplest (and most honest) answer: YES. Everyone comes from somewhere. As women, we carry multiple generations in our bodies. Understanding the story of your mother (or mother-like figures) doesn't necessarily change anything - but sometimes perspective can be permission to make sense of things.

Some relationships shape us in ways we don’t always have words for. The mother and daughter dynamic can hold deep love, intensity, tenderness, triggers, patterns, so many questions, and powerful opportunities for healing.

As "Mother's Day" approaches, I thought it might be high time to dive into these often-rich dynamics, like we've never done before. On May 3, I'll do a 60 minute virtual talk about the psychology and neuroscience behind why this relationship can feel so meaningful and so complex, and just what it means to write the next chapters of women and mothers. As we always do, we'll have 30 minutes for questions and discussion.

This is a special edition workshop designed to bring insight, connection and growth. Bring your mother, daughter, a mother or daughter figure, a step-mom, a mother-in-law, another family member, or come solo.
