With free play, comes creativity! Today we built a lawnmower. Being deep involved in play, the sadness was real when the lawnmower did not want to move to cut the grass.

Trust the process of free play and free art. Learning to create is more important than an end product. Here he selects a color, and after a short while asks for the next and the next. Keep creating and painting Josh! ❤️

Sunshine and beach days to celebrate summer. #2022
Living for new nature adventures.
Too much developmental benefits to even start listing them.

Let them climb, even if some safety assistance is needed as they overestimate their abilities. Gross motor coordination and strength is much needed for all other all aspects of development, including visual perception and cognitive development.

{Pre writing activity}
In between the running, climbing, jumping and playing with cars and trucks, we have fine motor moments.
Today we ‘painted’.
I love the water wow books! The water usually gets thrown out and finger painting soon follows the paintbrush, but all of it is part of pre writing skills.
Another favorite: painting with water on different color craft paper.

Make your mark in this 🌍
From about 12 months babies can be given crayons or markers to scribble with.
Needles to say, the first objective is staying on the paper (be sure to supervise and redirect to scribbles on a paper).

This early on, making a mark is the only objective.

Scribbling over the entire page is encouraged with joint scribbling. Encourage large whole arm movements and don’t worry at all about how the crayon or pencil is being held.

Just be present and enjoy!

{Bath toys}
It is often the simple items that make for the best toys and definitely leads to the most explorations of features and properties.

These are the favorites in our home at the moment!

Scooping and pouring and repeat. Lift small cups with one hand and the larger one with two hands.Taste bath water. Catch the turtle and fish with the strainer, watch the water run out.

Learning about the properties of volume and liquids 😁

Snow days!
If they are to small for the cold 🥶outside, bring the ❄️inside!

I didn’t direct play; I provided space and tools only. Initially I was called every time snow touched his hand, but after a while, snow was grabbed and hidden in the dump truck. He scooped, stirred and banged toys.

He handled big and large spoons, he turned over the containers. He experienced the cold of snow, he got wet as the snow melted, he tasted the snow.

Hand function was challenged, problem solving tested but most of all: He had FUN!

What worked well:
Rubber shoes, splat mat, plastic and metal kitchen tools for play.
Extra towels for cleanup, dry socks after playtime.
