My husband reminded me of a story recently about Henry Ford that I can’t stop thinking about.
A massive generator at one of his factories broke down, and none of the engineers could fix it. So Ford called in an expert. The man studied the machine quietly, made a single chalk mark, and told them to open it right there. They did, replaced one small part, and the generator came back to life.
His bill was huge. Ford asked why.
The expert replied:
Making the chalk mark: $1
Knowing where to put it: $9,999
And that’s the part that matters.
Because expertise isn’t about the one moment you see, it’s about the thousands of hours you don’t.
This is what doulas do.
We spend countless hours researching evidence based practices, staying current on birth science, learning comfort techniques, studying positions, understanding interventions, exploring supplements, products, and tools, and learning how to support both the physical and emotional experience of birth.
We do the work most mothers simply don’t have the time, energy, or bandwidth to do while growing a baby and preparing for a life change.
So when we suggest a position… When we recommend a tool… When we help you understand an option… When we notice something subtle in labor…
That’s the chalk mark.
You’re not paying for a moment. You’re benefiting from years of learning, training, experience, and deep care.
And unlike the brief windows you may have with medical staff, who are incredibly important and skilled in their role, doulas walk with you much longer, prenatal visits, on call support, continuous presence through labor and birth, and care into postpartum as you recover, adjust, and find your footing as a mother.
We are there for the midnight questions. The fears you don’t want to say out loud. The reassurance. The grounding presence. The ā€œyou can do thisā€ when you’re not sure you can.
Because birth isn’t just a medical event.
It’s a human experience.
And sometimes what makes the biggest difference is having someone beside you who knows exactly where to put the chalk mark. šŸ¤

Last night I walked back through my front door after a very long labor and delivery, well over 24 hours, carrying a full heart and heavy emotions.

One of the deepest honors of being a doula is that my clients become so much more than clients. Through pregnancy, labor, and birth, we walk closely together. We laugh, we cry, we push through fear, exhaustion, and hope side by side. They become like family to me.

This sweet family gave everything they had to bring their baby into the world, and while I will protect their privacy and will not share details, I can share this: their beautiful baby boy will be spending some time in the NICU.

If you are someone who prays, believes, sends love, or simply holds space, I am asking my community to surround this mama, daddy, and their precious baby with encouragement, strength, and hope right now. NICU journeys are not easy, and no parent plans for this road.

My work as a doula does not end when baby is born. I continue to wrap around mama with support, encouragement, lactation help, and postpartum care, especially when birth does not go as expected. Sometimes the most sacred part of this work is helping families learn to breathe through the unexpected and embrace what is, one moment at a time.

If you have ever had a NICU baby, love someone who has, or simply want to support this family, please consider lifting them up today. And if you are able, I will share information below for ways to help ease the burden on this sweet family during their NICU stay.

To every NICU parent past and present, you are some of the strongest people I know. Your love is fierce, your courage is quiet, and your babies are miracles.

Please keep this family in your hearts tonight.

šŸŒ™ Held Through the Night šŸŒ™
Some mothers are recovering on their own.
Some are healing after a C-section.
Some had long labors, fast births, or unexpected stories.
No matter how you had your baby—rest is not optional. It is part of physical recovery, emotional healing, and protecting your milk supply.
The 5-5-5 rule—five days in bed, five days on the bed, five days near the bed—exists for a reason. Those early days shape lactation, make latching easier, and allow your nervous system to settle so you can actually heal.
Overnight support from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. gives you that sacred rest. I care for your baby with gentle, responsive hands—feeding, soothing, settling, washing bottles, supporting sensitive sleepers, and bringing baby to you if you are a breastfeeding mama—so your body can do what it was designed to do: recover and nurture.
You were never meant to carry the nights alone.
Let someone help hold you through them. šŸ’›

January 14 — C-Section Awareness Day šŸ¤
As a doula, I want to be clear:
I don’t push for Cesarean birth when it isn’t medically necessary. Research shows that having a doula lowers C-section rates, especially first-time Cesareans, by supporting informed decisions, physiologic birth, and continuous care.
And also…
A C-section is not a failure.
A mother never did anything wrong.
And no one gets to judge a birth they didn’t live.
I am also a C-section mom. My baby flipped breech during labor, and my birth took an unexpected turn. Planned, unplanned, emergency, voluntary—whatever the reason, I know how complex and emotional these births can be.
If your journey includes a Cesarean, I am still here to support you.
Why a doula still matters for C-section births: • Prenatal education, preparation, and advocacy
• Emotional support before and during surgery
• Partner support during unexpected changes
• Postpartum recovery, bonding, and lactation support
• Trauma-informed care and birth processing
Birth isn’t about how your baby arrived—it’s about how supported and respected you felt.
You deserve care, compassion, and support—every step of the way. šŸ¤

Why hire a doula?
Because you deserve to be supported, seen, and held, not just during birth, but throughout your entire journey.
A doula provides advocacy during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum, continuous support that follows you before, during, and after birth, not just in the hospital, prenatal and postpartum education so you feel informed and confident, in-home prenatal and postpartum massage for relaxation, pain relief, and nervous system calming, postpartum support before baby arrives to help you prepare emotionally and practically, and lactation support customized to your body, your baby, and your goals.
Even for seasoned mamas, having a doula means lower stress and cortisol, a calmer and more connected experience, and someone whose sole focus is you, not the clock, not protocols, and not just the baby.
Family and friends often lovingly focus on the baby.
A doula’s role is to hold the mother, emotionally, physically, and mentally.
For mamas with past trauma or triggers, a doula can help you process fears ahead of time, support you in communicating your needs, and advocate with your birth team to reduce retraumatization.
Your care should be customizable, supportive, and centered on you, before, during, and after birth.
If you’re looking for connection, calm, advocacy, and real support, that’s what I’m here for. šŸ¤

Prenatal and postpartum massage supports a mother’s body and mind by easing pain, reducing swelling, improving circulation, supporting better sleep, and lowering stress. When your prenatal doula is also the one providing massage, it builds trust, emotional safety, and deep connection before labor begins, whether you plan to birth at home, in a birthing center, or in a hospital. That familiar, compassionate presence helps lower cortisol levels, promotes relaxation, and provides steady, continuous support in labor, offering a level of comfort and connection that busy nurses and rotating medical staff can’t always provide. This intimate, ongoing bond can help moms feel calmer, more supported, and mentally stronger through labor, birth, and recovery. Book your prenatal/postpartum massage today, in the privacy of your own home.
