Measles exposure risk in Rosthern

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is notifying the public of measles exposure risks in Rosthern. The exposure risks resulted from a confirmed case of measles. Individuals who were at any of the following locations during these time periods should monitor themselves closely for up to 21 days after the exposure:

Rosthern
• Rosthern Hospital – Emergency Department (2016 2nd Street, Rosthern):
o Friday, May 2, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
o Friday, May 2, 2025 from 7:25 p.m. to Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 3:40 a.m.
o Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 5:25 p.m. to Sunday, May 4 at 5:20 a.m.

Measles symptoms include:
• fever,
• cough,
• runny nose,
• red eyes,
• fatigue,
• irritability (feeling cranky or in a bad mood),
• small, white spots (known as Koplik spots) inside the mouth and throat, and
• red blotchy rash, which develops on the face and spreads down the body about three to seven days after symptoms begin and can last four to seven days.

Measles is prevented by vaccination. The measles vaccine is safe, effective and free. With two doses, measles vaccination is almost 100 per cent effective. Please review your vaccination status (if you were immunized in Saskatchewan, check your MySaskHealthRecord) or discuss with your health practitioner to ensure all you and your family’s immunizations are up to date.

Due to the highly contagious nature of measles, if you exhibit any of the above symptoms AND were at the identified location during the specified times, please call HealthLine 811 for symptom assessment and care advice. You may also contact your physician or nurse practitioner and inform them that you may have been exposed to measles. Do not attend a clinic in person if you are symptomatic—call HealthLine 811 for care advice. Anyone potentially exposed may be eligible for preventative treatment for up to six days after exposure. If you are in medical distress, please call BEFORE presenting to the emergency department or call 911, ensuring you identify that you may have been exposed to measles.

Measles is a highly contagious. It can spread very easily to others through the air. The virus can live up to two hours in the air or on surfaces in a space where a person coughed or sneezed. It can spread from four days before a rash appears until four days after a rash develops. Through this period, a person needs to stay in strict isolation to avoid spreading the infection to others.

RAPID, Substance P and Stem Cells… SAY WHAT???

If you know RAPID you know that one of our main goals is to stimulate the release of substance P.

Science is showing increasing support for the role of substance P in mobilizing endogenous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for improved tissue repair and inflammation regulation following bone injuries.

Meaning SP stimulates the body’s own endogenous stem cells to move from their storage sites-such as bone marrow into the bloodstream or to the site of injury or tissue damage.

From the study…

-Substance P promoted the mobilization of endogenous MCS’s.

-In cases of transplanted MSCs the transplanted cells often show survivability issues which hampers the outcome of regeneration.

-Intravenous substance P has been shown to mobilize endogenous MSCs, which is superior to their transplanted counterparts.

-Endogenous MSCs are located in different adult tissues and can move to an injury site when activated.

-MCSs can turn into various cell types, but they also help control inflammation after an injury, which supports tissue repair.

-Recent studies have shown that substance P, which acts as a messenger triggered by injury, can play a role early in the wound healing process by mobilizing MSCs from the bone marrow into the bloodstream.
