It’s influenced by your cervical spine, thoracic spine, posture, stress, sleeping habits, diet, & so much more.

When things go wrong in this area we call it Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD).

Things can become painful, clicky, & restricted.

Patients are usually surprised to find that there exist approaches outside of night guards to help alleviate symptoms associated with TMD.

We bet you know someone that has a meniscal-type issue in their knee.⠀

Meniscal pathology is incredibly common in younger populations (usually a small tear) & older populations (usually degenerative changes).⠀
-
You have two menisci: the medial (inside) & lateral (outside).⠀
-
They sit between your tibia & femur & help with making movements smooth, your joint more congruent, & assist with some shock absorption.⠀
-
Pictured above are three different types of meniscal tears & what they could evolve into over time.⠀
-
Those with meniscal pathology will likely have a painful knee that limits their ability to engage in meaningful physical activity.⠀
-
At least to the degree they once enjoyed.⠀
-
Some might even experience a knee that ‘locks’ & ‘catches’.⠀
-
We're always surprised with how many are considering surgery before engaging in a structured, individualized physical rehabilitation program.⠀
-
That’s because the research is very clear on when surgery will be of benefit & when it will not.⠀
-
The majority of meniscal issues do not require surgery - they require physical rehabilitation.⠀
-
However, if your knee is ‘locking’ into place or has a distinct ‘catching’ sensation while you bend & straighten your knee - you might need a surgeon to clean things up a bit.⠀
-
We're excited to share some research in the next couple of months that will help you make an informed decision on how you can best manage meniscal pathology & your painful knee.⠀
