Well the daffodils are up, but it’s looking like a grey and very rainy next few days on the coast. I’m rather hoping spring equinox will arrive by the end of the week in a riot of sunshine and birdsong and spring buds and blooms - and I for one, am feeling ready to be launched into the astrological new year and the season of initiation and movement and growth against all odds.
In Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the element of Wood. This is the energy of the seed sprouting, maneuvering around any and all obstacles, and making it to the surface to matter what. It is the energy of childhood and adolescence, of rapid growth - headstrong and determined, fierce and unapologetic. Energetically it feels much like the western astrological season of Aries which begins at the equinox. There’s fire and that readiness for getting going, for forward movement, impatience and maybe frustration that arises if we feel blocked or stuck.
And so, we have reached the season of beginning. The year is one quarter of the way through (from Winter Solstice), and at this point we ask - what dreams did I seed for the year ahead in the dark of winter, or at New Year’s? And now, what do I need to get moving on in order to make those dreams a reality?
I’ll also name how it can feel utterly preposterous to focus on initiating our own personal dreams and goals as we watch wars begin and escalate and spread and go on. As we witness the systematic inequity and abuse built into the very fabric of our societies. It’s easy to be paralyzed into inaction and freeze in the face of it all (and some might argue that this is the very point of the endless newsstream of horrors) - but this point in the seasonal cycle is asking us to act. To act now, act where we can.
What things can we do in our spheres of influence that can ripple outward? In some phases of life, this is “just” doing our own inner work so that we can engage in the world with less overwhelm. And eventually, (ideally) we are all well-resourced enough to act where we can, make contributions in our own communities, to advocate for and demand peace and equality in the wider world.
So at whatever capacity this point in the year finds you with, I hope you receive a little extra burst of vitality, inspiration, and juice to move yourself forward.
