Joanne Mary Maxwell (Spear), 86, died peacefully at the Drew Nursing Home in Sackville NB on August 5, 2025.

Joanne was the daughter of Bernard and Josephine Spear and grew up in Seeley’s Cove NB, a place that remains dear to her and her family. Joanne was the eldest of nine children whom she would refer to as "the kids," throughout her life.

At 18, Joanne went off to Saint John to Secretarial school. Joanne left the school early to begin a long secretarial career, stating to her instructor that she could not let her parents support her any longer and that she needed to find a job. Her first job was with the city of Saint John and one of her earliest posts was as the secretary to the mayor. She continued in various secretarial roles until her retirement in 2003.

Joanne married Glenn Maxwell in 1963 and Joanne and Glenn were married for sixty-two years. Joanne often stated that her greatest joy was being mother to her two little boys, Andrew and Chris. Joanne, over the years, loved spending time with her brothers, sisters and friends. Hosting or attending her bridge clubs and the dear friends that came with it, or hosting the annual Thanksgiving gathering with family, were always highlights for her and fueled her love of entertaining guests.

Joanne is survived by her husband Glenn and son Chris. Also survived by sisters Barbara, Joyce, Elizabeth (Jim Goldrich), Bernadine (Gill Wilson) and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

Joanne is predeceased by her son Andrew, brothers David, William, Robert and sister Judy.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). Cremation has taken place and there will be no public funeral or memorial, the family will be gathering privately to remember Joanne.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Drew Nursing Home, particularly those on the Chignecto unit for the care and love they have shown Joanne, most particularly in her final days.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of the donors choosing.
