The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from your brainstem down to your digestive system. It’s the main highway for gut-brain communication, carrying messages back and forth every single second.

But here’s what recent research revealed: your gut bacteria are actively maintaining this nerve. When gut bacteria get disrupted (like from antibiotics), vagal nerve activity decreases. When healthy bacteria are restored, nerve function comes back.

You’re “active sedentary” and don’t even know it. 🪑💥

Here’s the wake-up call: You can crush your workout every morning, hit your 10K steps, and still be at risk for cardiovascular disease if you’re sitting for 10+ hours a day.

The Cleveland Clinic found that prolonged sitting literally shuts down lipoprotein lipase—the enzyme responsible for burning fat and clearing glucose from your blood. Your body goes into shutdown mode, even if you worked out that morning.

But here’s the good news: You can reverse this with something ridiculously simple.

10 air squats. Every hour.

That’s it. Set an alarm. Stand up. Do 10 bodyweight squats. It reactivates those fat-burning enzymes, brings your glucose levels back down, and tells your body “we’re not shutting down today.”

The research shows this can literally outweigh the negative effects of sitting all day. It’s like hitting a metabolic reset button every 60 minutes.

Your challenge: Set an alarm for one hour from now. When it goes off, do your 10 squats. Notice how your energy shifts. Your body will thank you.

Goal Setting Without the Burnout 🕊️

Can we talk about how exhausting January has become?

Everywhere you look, there’s pressure to completely transform yourself. New year, new you. Go hard or go home. No excuses.

And if you’re a mom, add “do it all while taking care of everyone else” to that list.

No wonder most goals don’t make it past February.

I’ve leaned both personally and professionally that if your goals are burning you out, they’re not serving you.

Your nervous system can’t tell the difference between the stress of a demanding workout schedule and the stress of a looming deadline. Stress is stress. And when you pile goal after goal onto an already overwhelmed system, your body stays stuck in survival mode.

You can’t build sustainable wellness from a place of depletion.

So here’s how to set goals without the burnout:

💚 Start with ONE focus area. Not ten. One. Master that before adding more.
💚 Build habits, not huge overhauls. Small, consistent actions create lasting change.
💚 Honour rest as part of progress. Your body needs recovery to achieve anything. Rest isn’t lazy - it’s required.
💚 Listen to your body’s signals. If something feels like too much, it probably is. Adjust accordingly.
💚 Prioritize your nervous system. When your nervous system is regulated, everything else gets easier - sleep, energy, stress management, recovery.

Instead of “I need to work out 5x/week” → Try “I’ll move my body in ways that feel good 3x this week.”

Instead of “I need to fix everything” → Try “I’ll prioritize my nervous system health and let everything else flow from there.”

You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be consistent and kind to yourself.

This year, let’s set goals that actually support your wellbeing instead of destroying it. Start with your foundation - your nervous system - and build from there.
