On our final day of our 3 part series on pain-free gardening we are going to show some love to our back. Back pain is very common with gardening because of the repetitive bending that is involved. One way to help prevent pain is to stretch your back before, after and even during gardening to help keep your back joints and muscles feeling good.

How to:
Start by laying on your stomach. Place your hands underneath your shoulders. Press your upper body up while leaving your pelvis on the ground. Hold for 3 seconds. From here, keep your hands on the mat but send your hips backwards so that you are sitting on your calves. Your flexibility will determine how far back you can go. Hold for 3 seconds. For an added stretch, walk your hands towards the left. Hold for 3 seconds. Then, walk your hands back through the center and towards the right. Hold for 3 seconds. Repeat this series 5-10 times before and after gardening. Bonus points for taking a break while you are gardening to do it again.

If you live in southern Ontario, chances are you had to go out and shovel today. Unfortunately shoveling can be a strenuous exercise that your muscles and joints may not be used to. Try out these post snow-shovelling movements to keep your body feeling good after you put your shovel away.

1) Lumbar extension: place your hands on your lower back. Lean backwards as far as feels comfortable to you. Return to your starting position. Repeat 10x.
2) Kneeling side stretch: Kneel on the ground with your right knee and place your left foot on the ground infront of you. Lean to your your body sideways to the left while reaching overhead with your right arm. Return to your starting position. Repeat 10 times. Switch sides.
3) Mid back extension: stand 2-3 feet away from a wall. Place your hands on the wall around shoulder height. Lean forward, hinging from your hips, bringing your chest towards the ground. Repeat 10 times.
4) Self trigger point release: find a lacross ball, tennis ball or golf ball. Place the ball against your upper back and lean against a wall. Use your body weight to gently press into the ball and roll it around. If (and when) you find a spot that is tight or sore, hold it there until it starts to feel relaxed. Repeat for 1-2 mins.

The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend getting 150 mins of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week in bouts of 10 mins or more. What moderate to vigorous intensity means for each person will be different. Moderate activities should make you sweat a little and breath a little heavier. Vigorous activities should make you sweat and cause you to be out of breath.

I love a good high intensity aerobic workout. But, with gyms being closed and the weather getting colder (I am NOT a winter runner), getting outside and going for a brisk walk pushing a double stroller gives me a moderate intensity workout. This benefits both my physical and mental health. Try and get out for a walk today!
