Join us this National Physicians’ Day as we celebrate our colleagues in healthcare for their work in delivering the best care to our community.

Did you know that our pharmacy team works with your physician to optimize your care? For example, we ensure that your medications are working, and can recommend changes to avoid side effects or refine your dosage. We value this collaboration with doctors, so that we may provide you with the best possible care.

And here’s a fun fact! The date for National Physicians’ Day (May 1) was chosen to honour Dr. Emily Stowe's birthday, the first female physician to practice in Canada.

A fever, dry cough, sore throat, and fatigue are common symptoms of the flu. And we know they can make you feel awful. But, if you are otherwise in good health, not pregnant and younger than age 65, you are at low risk of complications and should feel better within a week.

It’s very important we all do our part in stopping the spread of the virus that causes the flu! If you or your child have the flu, be sure to stay home from work, school, and other public places, for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Winter is coming, and so are eczema flare-ups for many living with the condition.

The itch that often is associated with eczema can be the hardest part of living with the condition. Consider these tips from the Eczema Society of Canada to help calm the itch:

 Keep nails smooth and trimmed short to reduce damage from scratching.
 Try a cool compress or take a cool bath or shower.
 Try to reduce stress as much as possible. Find activities you enjoy and help you to relax.
 The use of moisturizer may help to relieve dry skin and itch.

Red eyes can signal several different possible health issues, however in many cases there are things you do to help prevent it:

Avoid rubbing your eyes
Keep contact lenses clean and wear only for as long as directed
Make sure to remove eye makeup properly
Take regular breaks when you’re looking at a computer screen for a long period of time
Avoid eye irritants such as dust, smoke, or pet dander

Ask our pharmacist for advice on when to see a doctor. They can also review the over-the-counter eye drop options for dry eyes, allergies and other common irritants that can cause red eyes.

Some medications, including certain antidepressants and beta-blockers, can interfere with the quality and duration of your sleep.

If you are having trouble getting enough sleep at night and think it might be due to a new prescription, stop by and speak with our pharmacist. They can help you figure out if an active ingredient, or a certain dosage might be affecting your sleep, and advise on whether you should speak to your doctor.

If your bare legs have ever brushed by poison ivy during a walk in the woods, you’ll know it! Contact with any part of the plant can cause a red, itchy rash.

The good news is that the rash will go away on its own, but it can be uncomfortable. Here are some steps you can take to control the itching:
• Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or ointment.
• Take an oral antihistamine to calm the reaction.
• Soak the area in a cool bath with baking soda or oatmeal.

Stop by the pharmacy to pick up everything you will need and to ask our pharmacist for advice on what else you can do to treat a poison ivy rash at home.

It’s Canada Day weekend and we’re all ready to celebrate!

If your family loves fireworks, it’s best to leave the big displays to the experts. Even using hand-held sparklers in your backyard comes with some dangers, so it’s important to keep these three safety tips in mind:

1/ Keep sparklers away from young kids. They burn extremely hot and if not handled correctly, can ignite clothing, and cause severe burns.
2/ Older children should handle sparklers carefully, under close adult supervision.
3/ Sparklers stay hot for several minutes after they go out. Keep a bucket of water nearby to drop them in when everyone is finished.

Our pharmacy team wishes you and your family a fun and safe Canada Day weekend!

All it takes is a gust of wind blowing sand into your eye to kill the vibe of a beach day. Even though one speck can feel like a boulder under your eyelid, you can get quick relief. Here’s what to do (and what not to do) when you get something in your eye:

• Do let your tears flow. Usually, they will flush out what’s in your eye within a matter of minutes.

• Don’t rub your eye or try to remove the sand or other object with your fingers. You could cause a scratch that could lead to infection.

• Do remove contact lenses right away if you are wearing them.
