Human Rights Day reminds us that mental health, housing, dignity and safety are everyday essentials.
This year’s theme, “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” calls on us to look at how human rights shape daily life in ways we often overlook: having a safe place to live, being treated with dignity, accessing mental health care without barriers and being supported instead of judged.
For many people across Ontario, these rights are still out of reach. Long waitlists, rising housing costs, stigma around substance use and the challenges of navigating the mental health system all impact whether someone can live with safety and stability.
Human rights start with us. It’s in how we listen, how we treat people, how we educate ourselves, how we vote and how we support those whose rights are most at risk. When we protect dignity and create equitable access to care, we strengthen our entire community.
Mental health is a human right. Housing is a human right. Dignity is a human right. Read more: https://niagara.cmha.ca/category/news-releases/

Not all disabilities are visible. On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we’re recognizing the many people who live with mental health conditions and other invisible disabilities that shape daily life in ways we can’t always see. True progress means creating communities where people with invisible disabilities feel understood and safe to ask for what they need.

That looks like flexibility. It looks like compassion. It looks like believing people when they share their experiences, even when we can’t see their symptoms. Small choices in how we listen and respond help build a society where everyone can participate fully and with dignity.

Today and every day, we’re committed to supporting disability inclusion in mental health care and across our communities. Invisible disabilities are real. Mental health matters. Inclusion moves us forward.
