It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn (Strong) Jackson, UE on Friday January 24, 2025 surrounded by family.
She was predeceased by husband Tom and leaves a sister, two sons and many grandchildren.

Marilyn served on the Board of Directors of the Mayholme Foundation and was a dedicated volunteer. Prior to her years at Mayholme she was a long time volunteer of the Niagara Peninsula Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, holding many positions including Chairman. Along with others she also worked on the Apolrod project which saved land registry records from being destroyed.

Rest in Peace Dear Friend

In the late 1800s, the telegraph served as the primary means of transmitting real-time information. Corlene’s ancestor, George W. Read, appears in the 1871 Port Dalhousie census as a telegraph operator, though it remains unclear why he later relinquished the position. Corlene’s grandfather, Eugene Dwyer, subsequently assumed this role when he opened his stationery store on Front Street in Port Dalhousie. Each day, Eugene would receive weather reports via telegraph and, upon learning of approaching storms, would visit the harbor’s customs house to put out the storm drums and hoist the flags as a warning signal.

Is there any documented evidence regarding the colors of these storm flags? Additionally, were weather flags displayed daily, or only in specific weather conditions?

Mayholme Foundation Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The Mayholme Foundation is proud to announce the celebration of its 20th anniversary. Established on October 14, 2004, the foundation was founded by Corlene Taylor with the vision of creating a dedicated research facility for historians and genealogists. Over the past two decades, Mayholme Foundation has grown into a vital resource, supporting researchers from across the globe, including those from England, Australia, the United States, and beyond.

Since its inception, the foundation has provided access to a wide range of research materials, helping individuals and institutions further their historical and genealogical inquiries. As the foundation continues to grow, the completion of a new facility ensures the preservation and expansion of its valuable collection for years to come.

The Board of Directors would like to extend sincere gratitude to all volunteers, supporters, and patrons who have contributed to the foundation’s success over the past 20 years. As the Mayholme Foundation looks forward to the future, it remains committed to offering high-quality research resources and maintaining its role as a trusted hub for historical and genealogical research.
