Did you know your childhood can predict your health as an adult?
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is a landmark public health project that revealed how early adversity—such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction—significantly increases the risk of long-term health challenges. Higher ACE scores are linked to:
- Increased risk for chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders
- Greater likelihood of mental health conditions, including depression and PTSD
- Higher rates of risky health behaviours, such as substance use
When children experience repeated or severe stress, it can disrupt the development of the brain, nervous system, and hormonal responses, leading to impacts that last a lifetime. Understanding ACEs helps us recognize the importance of prevention, early intervention, and trauma-informed support across all communities.
If you’re a health, education, or mental health professional, consider exploring ongoing training opportunities and certifications like ITATM® to strengthen your skills in supporting those affected by early adversity. Learn more at www.attch.org.
