Anger was the theme at this month’s Creative Kids session — and we spent some time helping children see it in a different way.
Instead of calling anger a “bad” emotion, we talked about it as a kind of bodyguard. Sometimes anger shows up when we’re actually feeling hurt, scared, lonely, or sad. It’s trying to protect us.
Using the image of an iceberg, the kids explored what feelings might be hiding under the surface of anger. What we see on the outside is often just the tip.
They also built their own “anger volcanoes,” a hands-on way to talk about big, explosive feelings. The lesson wasn’t that those feelings shouldn’t happen — they’re normal. What matters is learning how to safely let the steam out so it doesn’t hurt us or the people we love.
Creative activities like these help children understand their emotions, put words to what they’re feeling, and learn healthy ways to cope — skills that can make a real difference as they grow.
In Creative Kids, we use the process of creating to help kids express their thoughts and emotions in a safe and creative way.
We offer many more grief support programs for children and youth. All programs are free.
