How does chemotherapy affect the feet?

Chemotherapy can impact the feet in a number of ways. The skin and toenails, as well as sensation in the feet, can be affected by chemotherapy.

Certain chemotherapeutic medications can induce something called Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, or CIPN. This results from nerve damage and can cause numbness, tingling, or pain, loss of sensation, and movement issues in the hands and feet.

Other times, chemotherapy can impact the skin on a person's feet. This might appear as peeling skin, rashes, or raw-feeling skin.

Chemotherapy can also affect toenails, loosening them and making them brittle and prone to breaking or peeling.
