What Is Trauma? Trauma has many faces. It is a response to deeply distressing or disturbing events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. It can affect anyone, and its impact is felt across emotional, physical, behavioural, and cognitive domains.
Emotional Responses
- Intense feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness, or panic
- Emotional numbness or feeling detached from others
- Guilt, shame, or self-blame
- Mood swings or irritability
Physical Responses
- Fatigue or exhaustion
- Headaches, muscle tension, or digestive issues
- Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
- Racing heart, sweating, or feeling jumpy
Behavioral Responses
- Avoiding people, places, or activities that are reminders of the trauma
- Withdrawing from relationships or social activities
- Changes in eating or sleeping habits
- Increased use of substances or engaging in risky behaviours
Cognitive Responses
- Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks about the event
- Difficulty concentrating or memory problems
- Negative thoughts about oneself or the world
These reactions are normal, human responses to overwhelming experiences, they are not signs of weakness or failure. Most people recover over time, but if symptoms persist, support from a trauma-specialized professional can make a difference.
