Wild Woodsy Winter Wellness in a Bottle!! FIRE CIDER 😜

Fire Cider is a TONIC that is made from a combination of fruits, vegetables, herbs & roots that is left to infuse for several weeks in APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

The tonic (liquid) is strained & consumed daily during the winter months as a wellness & immune boosting SHOT!! 😋

I was first blessed with a bottle of this kick-butt elixir from friend & Sister in Christ Janice 🙏🙏

What Ingredients Typically Go in Fire Cider?

The base recipe generally includes horseradish, ginger, garlic, lemons, cinnamon, red onions, thyme, hot peppers, and apple cider vinegar. (with mother)

But there is no reason to stop there. Because this is a folk preparation, the ingredients can change from year to year depending on when you make it, what's growing around you, and what medicinals you may have FORAGED 🌱 over the season. 😜

This is my very first Fire Cider attempt. I decided to select several of the ingredients based on my location, foraging experience & the medicinal benefits they boast! 😜

Juniper, Sumac, Spruce Tips, Pine & Elderberry are my STAR ingredients in this FIRST BATCH. With the exception of the Juniper Berries, they are some of favourite foraging foods & medicines up here on the mountain. 😉

Fresh herbs I added & grow included Rosemary, Spearmint & Red Basil 🌱

Because I love to experiment with food & flavours I chose to add to the typical base ingredients of Fire Cider high
Vit C & Anti-Inflamatory goodies such as,

Tumeric root
Pepper Corns (increase bioavailability of Turmeric)
Cranberries
Pomegranate
Licorice root
Hibiscus 🌺

I also chose to add some RAW HONEY to the jar as per the recipe suggestion in the 1st link.

Foraging is NOT over because temperatures are dropping!

What’s medicinal & benifical growing around you? This has been a “Devine prompting” for me the last 3+yrs, knowing what medicinal & edible plants were is my backyard!!

Today I harvested red raspberry leaves which I will combine with Sumac berry.

I used a plant identification app. today because common blackberry can be mistaken for red raspberry.

Red raspberry is a nutraceutical and is well know for its
medicinal properties. Red raspberry leaf also contains vitamin E, tannins, and flavonoids, which are potent antioxidants!!!

Antioxidants can help protect against the free radicals that may damage cells and contribute toward the development of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, red raspberry leaf may have some benefits in reducing the risk of these conditions.

Combining Red Raspberry & Sumac for inhibiting cancer cells.

“We characterized sumac and raspberry interactions, and their antioxidant capacities (ACs) and their inhibitory effect on both normal and cancerous cells.

Mixing sumac and raspberry extracts yielded significantly higher ACs than the sum of sumac and raspberry as evaluated by three in vitro AC assays.

However, the potential use of staghorn sumac as a natural source of dietary antioxidant supplement for oxidative-stress-related disorders might be challenged by its cytotoxicity in culturing normal cells.

Remarkably, mixing sumac and raspberry showed maximal inhibition of the growth of both rat colon and human breast cancer cells with relatively low cytotoxicity toward normal rat colon and human breast epithelial cells, as compared with sumac or raspberry treatment alone.

Sumac-derived products and their synergistic interactions with other food ingredients have great promise as functional food or nutraceutical products that would target cancer cells with minimal toxic effects to normal cells.”

Why do I go through the trouble?

Because, there should ever be trouble, I’m in less trouble 😛

No, seriously, dehydrating food is no trouble at all. In fact this very busy woman has her “ male servants” working overtime in the fall. 😂

Honestly, I prefer being prepared. We have nasty ice storms & snowstorm in Quebec. My husband has been snowed in twice already up at the camp and he was grateful and so was the neighbour that there was something put aside & shelf stable in the party!

So what am I doing here? This is shredded carrots. Frozen and shredded means it’ll dehydrate much faster and when I’m done, I will powder this and be able to store 2 kg of carrots in a small mason jar.

It won’t stay there very long however because I am going to use the powdered carrots 🥕
in a little experiment I’m doing, and making carrot flavoured gnocchi!

Adding powdered vegetables & fruits to your food increases the nutrient content, adds flavour and in the case of gnocchi, COLOUR! 🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕

Dehydrated foods

Often when I speak to people about stocking up your pantry, I will often hear “I don’t have the space. Or there’s not enough space in my freezer.”

Did you know that one of the most economical and practical ways of stocking your pantry is with dehydrated foods?

CHECK THIS OUT 👇🏻

I can fit 2 kg of cauliflower pearls into a mason jar. The same with the string beans, they’re a little larger, but 2kg fits into two mason jars. Less than a full mason jar & I have 2 kg of carrots. The same thing with the peas.

Having dehydrated, mushrooms of all types is a specially convenient. Do you know if you place your dehydrated mushrooms in the sun for a few hours vitamin D three levels increase! This is important in the winter months when we don’t get a lot of sunshine. Vitamin D three is crucial to support immune system.

If you have a vacuum sealer with the accessory for vacuum sealing your mason jars you’re in business. These items can last on your shelves for years!

And, you can even re-vacuum seal them if you take them out and use them.

It’s pretty straightforward, not complicated and the beauty of a dehydrator comparative to canning food or pressure canning, is you don’t have to be physically there to supervise the process. They are made to run overnight for for days on end of necessary.

I called them, my “man servants” 😂😂 and it’s not uncommon for me to have multiple “man servants” working at this time of year.

Having these items in the pantry has saved my husband’s butt a few times 😉 especially when he has been snowed in up here on the mountain, alone.

As for myself, it’s super practical too especially when there’s a recipe that I’m in the mood for or have a craving for and I don’t have the fresh produce handy.

Well, I have it in a dehydrated form. I adjust the recipe accordingly. What I seriously appreciate about having these dehydrated items around is that they’re fantastic to add to a broth, they can be powdered and mixed back into casseroles, sauces, smoothies.

If you’re creative the possibilities are endless. 😉

Yes, they lose part of their nutritional value because they are dehydrated, but they’re still very nutritional, a healthier alternative than canned foods that are lined with toxic , and you’ve got food in case of an emergency.

Reminder, of course, you don’t want everything in your pantry to items that require water to rehydrate.

Water is the most important and per person you need 1.5 L of drinking water per person in case of an emergency. so

Good idea to keep that in mind when you’re planning & organizing yourself, preparing for what ever may come, & making sure you have enough food & provisions available to hold you over for several weeks to a month. It’s worth it.
