DO YOU HAVE DIABETES?
STAY SAFE WHEN YOU ARE SICK AND/OR DEHYDRATED!

You are at risk of dehydration if you have any of any of the following:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Excessive exposure to heat and/or humidity without drinking enough

Drink fluids to rehydrate!
- Consider electrolyte replacement solutions such as Hydralyte or Pedialyte
- Drink soups or broths
- Water is always a great choice
AVOID CAFFEINE! It may make dehydration worse!

If you inject insulin:
- Check your blood sugar more often
- You may need to adjust the amount of insulin you inject

If the symptoms last more than 24 hours and you continue to be at risk of dehydration:

There may be medications you need to temporarily stop.

Throwing medication away in your trash is not a good idea. Many animals - wild AND domestic - like to forage and eat things that they find in garbage and landfills.

Flushing your medication down the toilet is also not great as they contaminate our water supply because sewage treatment facilities aren't able to process the medication. In 2021, Canadian researchers found pharmaceuticals in water samples, and Health Canada reported increasing pharmaceutical contaminants in groundwater, drinking water, and food sources!

As part of the Ontario Medications Return Program, we will dispose of your medications in a safe, confidential, and free manner!
