Totally love this!!!

Last week I had the opportunity to speak at Woodlynde School about how parents can teach kids to take charge of anxiety and negative thinking for now and for a lifetime. I showed this slide early in the talk and asked the audience to tell me what they noticed. People commented about how narrow the space of safety feels to kids with anxiety. The space feels so small, kids can barely find room to stand, though the reality is very different. But how can kids know that without seeing for themselves? What I love about this drawing that my husband, Phil Stern, did for Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is how it captures so well the universal experience of overcoming fear-- namely: that it is a two-person job.

Kids have to step out themselves, parents can't swoop and rescue them. But by being there, showing kids it's OK to do things that feel uncomfortable at first, kids will get the signal that it's OK to go ahead and take that step, and many more, discomfort and all. Kids will come to see that anxiety gets it wrong every time and they don't have to miss out on life just because anxiety gets there first and decides this is scary! Kids can learn to override that message and see for themselves the great possibilities that lie just outside the limits of their fears.
