Well invested 55min. Listen to this podcast on how to apply the yoga sutras by Patanjali into your modern day life if you are interested in yoga philosophy and want to learn more about how to apply yoga OFF the mat.
Most people start yoga as a workOUT. This is where I started too. Asana (the physical practice of yoga and the 3rd of the 8 limbs of yoga) is great for a healthy body and a great tool to reduce stress and prevent or relieve pain and and and.... BUT...there is so much more to yoga than just that. In fact, ONLY 3 of the 196 sutras of Patanjali, so a mere 2%, talk about the physical practice of yoga. Crazy, isn't it? The more you practise yoga, the more of a workIN (wards) it becomes. It is a magical process that happened unnoticed for me for several years ❤️
An example of how yoga could be applied to in your day to day life:
Imagine having a conversation with someone. You are a 100% engaging with that person, all your attention is on what they are telling you. You are listening to them, absorbing the information, learning from them and give them the attention they deserve.
That means you are not letting anything else distract you from their words, you are a 100% in the present moment, you might even practise focusing and paying attention and not letting any outside factors distract you as you listen. This CAN be yoga. Cause let's be honest, we're easily distracted nowadays. Phones, noises, inner dialogue and thoughts and and and.
What would be the exact opposite to yoga in this scenario? Being on your phone while that person shares their knowledge or thoughts and their time with you. Unfortunately a common scenario these days. Something to work on ;)
So really, yoga can be applied in so many ways in our lifes without ever doing any physical yoga pose. 'You can do yoga without doing any asana or you can do asana without ever doing yoga'
I've been lacking time and motivation to get on my mat for days but after listening to this podcast today I realised that I've been practising yoga this entire time. Listening to educational podcasts can be yoga as long as you focus and learn something new, accepting that you are not motivated enough to practise can be yoga, helping people and doing self-less acts, can be yoga. Taking a deep breath and analysing the situation before you take action can be yoga. The list goes on.
