Can you guess which of these retinas is considered "healthy"?

Yep, you guessed it! The image on the left is considered a healthy, normal retina, while the image to the right is damaged by a condition called "Diabetic Retinopathy"

It is a complication of diabetes caused by high blood sugar levels. DR involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels, which can swell and leak, affecting the vision. Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision loss world wide.

Early diabetic retinopathy very rarely has signs or symptoms, making regular eye examinations crucial for preventing serious damage and vision loss.

Knowing the symptoms of a retinal detachment could safe your vision one day.

Although painless, a retinal detachment is considered a medical emergency, as it can cause irreversible blindness if not treated quickly. This happens when the retina (the part of your eye that sense light and sends signals to the brain so you can see) pulls away from the tissue underneath it.

Symptoms of a retinal detachment include:
⚫️An unusually large amount of new floaters
⚫️Flashes of light
⚫️A shadow or "curtain" effect in front of or on the periphery of your vision

If you suspect you might have a retinal detachment, don't wait. Contact your optometrist or head to the Emergency Room.

Meet Dr. Corey Kisser!

We are thrilled to have had Dr. Kisser join us at Alpine Optometry since relocating to Salmon Arm with his family this past fall.

Upon graduation from Pacific University in 2013, Corey spent 7 years working in the Yukon, practicing full-scope optometry with an emphasis on ocular disease and surgical co-management with Ophthalmology. From there, Dr. Kisser moved to Williams Lake where he spent the next 4 years, until finally settling in Salmon Arm with his wife and two young children.
In his free time, Corey enjoys many outdoor activities including, but not limited to, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, and growing and harvesting apples and other types of fruits from the trees on his property.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kisser as the newest member of the Alpine team!
