It is a great honour to be able to dive back deeply into the world of this character Shirley Valentine ONE LAST TIME! The Filming of Grace Jordan is Shirley Valentine takes place here on Stonewell Farm this Sunday! Gates open at 3:30pm for Greek Tapas and Wine Bar. With the hopes that all who are coming will be ready to be filmed and to talk all things Shirley V.! The show starts at 5:30pm and goes until 8pm or so.

THE FILMING OF GRACE JORDAN IS SHIRLEY VALENTINE – 20th ANNIVERSARY!

You are invited to a special event – The Filming of the Live Performance of Grace Jordan is Shirley Valentine! I get to play her one more time and you get a chance to see her one more time!

20 years ago, I first played Shirley Valentine to raise money for a film prize that I had won, whilst living on Pender Island with my young family. Fast forward 20 years later, and we have an outstanding event here on our tiny little farm over this past August long weekend to celebrate those 20 years of playing her and to say Farewell. But those who came to the recent shows have been asking over and over again: “Is it true? Is this really your last time? Did somebody film it?”

So, I have been petitioned by many lovely friends, family members and fans of Grace Jordan is Shirley Valentine to SHOOT A LIVE PERFORMANCE of the play. And I have decided to also go ahead with the help of the wonderful filmmaker Sydney Woodward, to make a mini-documentary of it as well! So, 20 years later we can make another film – now how is that for coming full circle!

So, the (really last!) performance and shoot are scheduled on our outdoor stage for Sunday September 15th (or rain check date Sunday September 22). Gates open at 3:30 for Greek Tapas and Wine Bar (which by the way were a great hit and the Garry Oaks wine – divine!), and chats and interviews and your testimonials. Followed by the filmed live performance from 5:30 to 8:30pm.

DVDs of the live performance will be available for advance purchase on Eventbrite as well – in the Add-ons Section, although it will take several months for post-production.

HE KISSED ME STRETCH MARKS!

“He kissed me stretch marks, y’ know. He did! He said they were lovely because they were a part of me, and that I was lovely.”

I can’t give too much of the play away for those who have not seen it yet. But you get the gist. The truth is, I have not been aging well. What I mean by that is, I am just so damn self-conscious about aging! Everything about me has changed since The Menopause. I don’t even recognize myself. But I also grew up with a mother who put me on a tomato soup and grapefruit diet when I hit puberty and really started gaining weight. I don’t want to care about it as much as I do. And another truth bomb, I am frightened of getting up in front of a whole bunch of people, friends a lot of them, who haven’t seen me since before Covid, because I am worried about what they will think. I really, really wish this wasn’t the case but it is.

And one more truth bomb, I haven’t let anyone, kiss me stretch marks – no way! But I will tell you what, I think Shirley is gobsmacked by the kindness and sweetness of Costas’ remark. “That they were lovely because they were a part of me and that I was lovely”. It is where I want to get to within myself. Gosh, what a place to be, to love yourself wholeheartedly, to love everything about yourself; every wrinkle, every age spot, every stretch mark, every grey hair, oh yeah and the increasingly saggy flesh, that might be the hardest one
.but I am trying and so thank you Costas, thank you W***y Russell for writing such a thing
..for appreciating what it is like to live in a society as an older woman that only focuses on keeping the aging from showing at all costs and oh what it costs!

See you soon. Friday night is pretty much sold out and Thursday is heading that way. Plenty of tickets left for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. So come early please so we have time to wine and dine you all with our homemade Greek Tapas and wine from Garry Oak Vineyards!

GUESS WHERE I’M GOIN?

And what Shirley Valentine wants to know is are you comin’ too?

I don’t know about your experience, but there have been a few times in my life where once I made a scary decision to do something, something that I knew was going to change my life, what followed was FLOW! Just like what happens for Shirley, once she makes the decision to cash in on that free ticket to Greece. “Things went marvelous after that!” Now you can still feel Flow even if things are going haywire, (which has certainly been the case leading up to these five last shows) – but even so, underneath the chaos, I can feel it, I can feel the Flow and I can feel the energy building, and soon I know that there is nothing I can do but surrender to the moment, to what is, and to the audience itself. Because every night is different. And somehow there is this thing that happens with live theatre. Somehow exactly the right people show up and this audience creates its own energy each night. Different but unique. And the only job I have, (except of course for remembering a 2- hour monologue) is to listen to you, move with you and be moved by you. Oh, gosh now I am getting excited

BUT I MIGHT LIKE THEM IN GREECE!

How you are experiencing life, as it rolls out before you, really is all a matter of perspective isn’t it? In the play as she is getting ready to go, Shirley says: “I’m goin’ to sit and eat olives at a Greek seafront! An’ I don’t even like olives! But I might like them in Greece!”

Somehow as I have gotten older, and as I have been going through the Menopause, there are some beliefs that I have, that I know aren’t really true, but that have stuck anyways. They are my – ‘I don’t like olives’ – full stop. And some of the main ones are: “It is too late for me. I have wasted my life force, my talent. I am a disappointment to my family.” Now these are all beliefs that I share with the character Shirley Valentine. And it just seems so much harder to shed them as you get older. It is like they have become embedded in my skin. And then of course these false beliefs begin to create and colour the life one is experiencing
.

Shirley Valentine was written by W***y Russell, by a man, about his own working-class mother. Gosh, I wish I could meet him. And thank him. And tell him how much this portrayal of a woman, that so many women can so relate to. Women who have felt abandoned by the world, by their families, by their friends, after the children leave and after their role is done. There really just aren’t that many roles out there like this in the theatre world to play, and I am just so grateful that W***y wrote Shirley Valentine and that another man, Ron Po***ck found me and encouraged me to change my mind about myself and that I might just like those olives in Greece

"YOU’RE BRAVE SHIRLEY. I WANT YOU TO KNOW I THINK YOU'RE MARVELLOUS"!

One week until Opening Night Thursday August 1, and I have never been more terrified. You’d think that after 20 years of performing this character, it might have gotten a bit easier for me. But like I mentioned a few posts ago, I have kind of lost my confidence. It feels like I have been in this endless metamorphosis, waiting for the next chapter, waiting for the transformation. Deciding to put on Shirley Valentine for a final go, is literally like deciding to take that ticket from my best friend Jane, and goin’ to Greece. She is just as terrified as I am right now. But I had to take the ticket, I had to do it, for meself. I have to believe that there is life beyond menopause, that someday I will come to like meself and stop caring what others think of me. That someday I will come to understand that I am enough. So, I would like to make this statement: “You’re Brave Grace Jordan. I want you to know I think you’re marvellous!”

Ticket sales are quite low dear friends of Grace Jordan is Shirley Valentine – especially for Sunday and Monday night – Closing night, so bring a gaggle, and you can let them know that Grace guarantees them a night to remember!
