Katherine Scimmi Announces Retirement from McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home - Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre to Assume Ownership

SARNIA, ON - July 9th, 2025 -After nearly three decades of service to the Sarnia community, Katherine Scimmi has announced her retirement and the transition of ownership of McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre to Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre, another long-standing, locally owned funeral provider.

McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home was founded in 1946 by Donald McKenzie and Paul Blundy, both Royal Canadian Navy veterans who returned from service with a shared commitment to helping families through some of life's most difficult moments. The firm has operated continuously from its stately Victorian-era home on Christina street, serving generations of local families with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Katherine began her career with McKenzie & Blundy in 1997 as secretary. She later became General Manager and ultimately acquired the business from Grant McKenzie, son of co-founder Donald McKenzie. Under her leadership, the funeral home remained rooted in its founding values while evolving to meet the changing needs of the community.

"I've had the privilege of working alongside a dedicated team and serving families during some of their most difficult moments," said Scimmi. "It has been an honour to uphold the values this firm was built on and to carry forward the legacy established by the McKenzie and Blundy families."

Effective August 29th, 2025, ownership of McKenzie & Blundy will transition to Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre. Smith Funeral Home was founded in 1980 by the Smith Family, fully taken over by Don, Laurene, and Scott Smith in 2001 and proudly owned and operated today by Scott Smith and Emily Whitely. Smith Funeral Home remains deeply committed to serving the Sarnia-Lambton community with compassion, dignity, and personalized care for every family served.

"We are honoured to carry on the tradition of excellence that Katherine and her team have maintained at McKenzie & Blundy," said Scott Smith. "Our shared values and strong community roots make this a natural fit, and we look forward to supporting families with the same trusted care."

The McKenzie & Blundy location will remain in operation as Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre - McKenzie Blundy Chapel, ensuring ongoing continuity of service and care for the community.

Obituary of Bonnie Lynn Yates

Bonnie Lynn Yates passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025. She was born November 12, 1944 in Chicoutimi Quebec. The oldest child and only daughter of the late Jessie and Bill Yates. Bonnie spent most of her 80 years happily living in Sarnia and Bright's Grove.

Throughout her life, our Mother worked many jobs and made friends easily. She loved people and had a keen sense of style. Mum carried herself with class and dignity through all of life's ups and downs and she instilled resilience in all of us.

First and foremost, Mum was a homemaker. Family was always the focus of her time, energy and attention. She kept herself busy cooking, cleaning, decorating, healing, entertaining, counselling and comforting. Mum was a giver and she taught us all a masterclass in that. Her legacy will live on in the kind and humble hearts she nurtured.

Bonnie exemplified the extraordinary, while living what appeared to be an ordinary life. Mum gave everything she had until her last breath. We will forever be grateful that she loved us and we'll miss her everyday.

Bonnie will be dearly missed by her son; Chris (Teena) Burley, Daughter; Sherryl Burley Marcoux. Grandchildren; Jacob (Rebecca), Yazmine (Jake), Hayden (Chantal), Zander (Alysia), Gavin, Quinlan and Declan. Brother; Carl (Christine) Yates. Sister-in-law; Mary Lou McMahon. Nephews & Nieces; Jeff (Shannon) & Jon (Carly) Yates, Shaun (Tammy) Burley, Steven (Janine) McMahon & Shelby (Dan) Wilkins and the late Shannon (Shane) Burley. Special Friends; Steve (Marilyn) Burley, Margaret Overton and Pam Steele. Predeceased by Jon, Stuart, Linda, Irene and Lloyd Burley.

We are grateful for the exceptional care our Mother received over the last year and a half. Special Thanks to staff at Bayshore particularly Blaine, Mel and Edith, Bluewater Health Palliative Care Staff; especially the care of Dr. Kim, Dr. McSweeney, Dr Al, Dr. Crombeen and Dr. Lilly. Thank you Pam, Christine, Lauren, Scott, Shawn, Carrie, Judy, Rachael, Abby, Mike, Irene and everyone else at St. Joseph's Hospice who made a very difficult time in our lives a little more bearable.

Thank you to Dale and the McKenzie & Blundy staff. A private funeral for Bonnie will take place later this month.

As an expression of sympathy, friends who wish may send memorial donations to the Sarnia & District Humane Society, 131 Exmouth St., Sarnia, N7T 7W8. Messages of condolence & memories may be left at www.mckenzieblundy.com.

Obituary of Colleen Anne Donohue

DONOHUE, Colleen Anne - On January 12th, Colleen Anne Donohue passed away peacefully at the Grace Health Centre in Toronto, as a result of complications from Parkinson's. Born and raised in Sarnia, Colleen was the daughter of William Anthony Donohue and Eileen Irwin Donohue. Colleen was predeceased by siblings Bill, John, Elizabeth, Helen and Mary Eileen, and is survived by siblings Irene, Pat and Joe. Colleen's multivarious working life included stints as a teacher, journalist, office worker and nanny. A beloved sister and devoted aunt, Colleen had a phenomenal memory for all our birthdays and anniversaries into the third generation. Some of her most renowned talents were her joke-telling flair and her ability to hold audiences captive while conveying many accents in her story-telling. She especially enjoyed swimming in Lake Huron but, when it came to life's pleasures, her love of dogs topped everything else. The youngest of nine siblings, Colleen was always generous with her time and resources. A beautiful, lively and entertaining presence, Colleen will be sadly missed at all our gatherings.

A graveside committal service will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 11 a.m.

PLEASE NOTE…There is construction on Michigan Ave. You must take Errol Rd. E. from Indian, then to Michigan Ave to enter the cemetery.

In Colleen's memory, donations can be made to the St. John the Compassionate Mission in Toronto, a community that was a great support to Colleen in her final years: http://www.stjohnsmission.org
