One of the things we get asked the most during winter is, "What's better, a lotion or a cream... and what's the difference, anyway?" 🤷♀️ The truth is, they're very similar and what you prefer may depend on your skin's specific needs. There are actually four different textures of moisturizers: gel, lotion, cream, and ointment.
So, what's the difference?
🫶 Gels have a watery consistency and the most lightweight option. They're often clear and absorb very quickly with a refreshing, weightless feel.
🫶 Lotions also have a high water content and are lightweight and non-greasy. They contain more skin-softening ingredients than gels. Ideal for normal-oily skin, or in warmer, more humid months.
🫶 Creams are thicker and provide a barrier to keep skin ultra-hydrated, preventing transepidermal water loss. They may feel greasier because they contain a higher percentage of oil.
🫶 Ointments are the thickest consistency and contain occlusive ingredients - like petroleum jelly - that form a barrier over the skin, rather than being absorbed. Ointments are often used for target-relief of dry, rough patches of skin, like cracked heels or chapped lips.
What brands do we recommend? CeraVe, Cetaphil, Aquaphor, Aveeno- or anything that is non-scented!
We carry many samples of these products, just ask at the front desk if you're in the clinic!
