We all have strengths, love to give, and care for our littles.
Each parent will have their ways of performing tasks, and sometimes frustrations can rise up.
Take a breath, try not to take over, ask if they want help, if not, maybe leave the room. Sometimes having someone looking over our shoulder makes us feel more overwhelmed and that we're doing something wrong. Listening to your baby/chuld cry or protest is hard to listen to, they also need to learn to trust both parents.

If you don't feel your baby is safe, then trust your gut and intervene.

What?! Ask for a pause during a fight, I could never.

When we are in an emotionally charged moment, we are not always actively listening and many of us think we have to win a fight.

By pausing and coming back together, allows both of you to calm down, possibly take in what your partner was saying and feeling, and coming back together when you both are more ready to listen and work together.

This also then shows your children healthy role models that may fight who come back and repair.

Everyone has a way of doing things, and sometimes this can cause conflict in a relationship.
Becoming a parent, these moments may arise a lot more then pre-baby, due to lived experience (one's childhood and beliefs), personality, stress, comfort, and more.

Each parent will play differently, this is a GOOD THING. Variety teaches children to learn different limits, and develope different skills. As the parent observing, we can also learn new things and encourage our partners to be authetic.

Extended family may need to be reminded of this as well when they're giving unsolicated advice. Listen to them, and take what you want, sometimes it will be good advice, other times, you may feel insulted. In the end, the co-parents are you and your partner and finding common ground and goals is important.

Transiition into Parenthood workshop can help you and your partner communicate, be less reactive to one another, and learn to trust one another as you co-parent. Sleep deprivation and learning this new human needs and wants is overwhelming, don't forget you and your partner's relationship.

No one is perfect, you each have strengths, learning what these are can help you balance each other in this parenting journey.

Since 2013 September 30th has been knows as Orange Shirt Day. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, action, and learning. Why an orange shirt? This because Phyllis Webstad remembers picking out a beautiful new orange shirt that she picked out especially for her first day of school. Upon arriving at the school they stripped her of her new shirt and never gave it back. This has become the symbol of how the residential school strip an entire race of people from their culture, language, and way of life. The effects of generations of people attending residential schools is still felt today.

As a parent of mixed race children I struggle with today and how to teach my children of the past. As I reflect to what life would have been like in the past I realize the fate of my children would have depended on where they lived. If we had chosen to live with my husband’s family, my children too would have been striped from my arms and sent away. The thought of this breaks my heart. I struggle with how best to help my children understand the past and how it effects the present because of my own lack of knowledge. I am still trying to educate myself about the events and effects of residential schools. As a parent I could not imagine having my babies, my blessings, ripped away from me never knowing what happened to them. It breaks my heart to think about. I cannot imagine the effect that would have on my life and the way I would have treated my children, I wouldn’t know upon their return. I could not imagine how my children would have felt or how they would of coped after they returned. But the truth is that their grandma, great grandparents, and many other family members lived through these events.

So on this day reflect upon the past, committed to learning about residential schools and understand the impacts it still has present day, and remember the many children that did not make it home.
