COMMUNICATION ISSUES - Dysarthria

Brain injury due to trauma, tumour, or degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, Progressive Aphasia, Huntington’s disease, ALS or Multiple Sclerosis may result in communication problems, Including Dysarthria, a motor speech disorder (disruption in the brain to speech connection) causing one or more of the following characteristics:
Slurred speech, differences in volume, breathing, rhythm, pitch, nasality and rate of speech, inconsistent, incorrect sounds (apraxia of speech).

How Music Can Help People With Aphasia

Some research has shown that using music is effective in treating aphasia. One thought is that because music activates the right hemisphere, it may create new neural pathways for language. In addition, music has lots of repetition, which is necessary for improving speech and language. As well, even reading about a genre of music you find interesting, recalling a list of songs you love, or discussing different artists are great ways to practice using language. Karaoke may be a fun way for those with mild aphasia to practice because it can help them get words out, use more expression, and read.

The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia

I’ve been doing a great deal of thinking about how we can bring fun into people with aphasia’s lives. Amazing aphasia researchers have actually created the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) as a way of helping people with aphasia start with the “fun,” or what is meaningful and purposeful to the individual with aphasia. This is the first step to successful speech-language treatment!

Cognitive-Communication Disorders Explained

Brain injuries caused by trauma, tumours, or degenerative diseases can lead to various communication difficulties. These may manifest as cognitive communication disorders, which encompass challenges with attention, memory, problem-solving, planning, organization, and social communication skills. Social communication challenges could involve talking excessively, misinterpreting body language, or misunderstanding humor.

Achieve 50% improvement in your accent with accent modification.

Accent modification, also known as accent reduction or accent training, is a process designed to help individuals modify or adjust their accents in a target language. It involves developing new speech patterns, intonation, pronunciation, and overall speech clarity to achieve clearer and more effective communication. The goal of accent modification is not to eliminate an individual's native accent entirely but rather to enhance their intelligibility and ease of communication in their second or non-native language.

THE BENEFITS OF VISION BOARDS FOR APHASIA.

Visualization is a powerful way to help us to rewire our brains, thanks to neuroplasticity. This allows us to make goals stick and achieve success. Though making a picture collage might seem silly to some (even me at first), neurological programming is happening (what a relief). Seeing images on a vision board helps us notice things that could otherwise slip by without being noticed. The way our brain works is that it imprints important things into your subconscious and gets rid of unnecessary information, and pictures work better than words! The more you look at an image, the more that image moves up in importance, imprinting in your brain and potentially forming new pathways. This is the science behind why imagining something can get results; e.g. people who imagine themselves flexing a muscle achieve actual physical strength gains.
