When communicating with others, it can be helpful to ask directly for what you need from the interaction
Being clear gives others a good chance at meeting you somewhere along the way instead of having to follow a bunch of clues around
You might try telling someone that you need them to listen and support you/your feelings as you tell them about something that happened
Perhaps you are facing a problem and you need help working through it, or you need to confront something with someone
Maybe you have a story that you’re proud to tell, or you need to vent about something that you don’t want to over think
Telling someone what you want from your interactions can help eliminate guessing for everyone involved. They will be able to be in better communication with you and you will be more likely to feel seen and heard in your interactions

How can you practice regulation so that you can more easily switch rides when all the twists and turns feel like they’re too much?

As a counsellor my goal is to help you work toward your goals
In doing so I aim to be affirming, ethical, evidence-based, and curious
Affirming - I will do my best to meet you where you’re at. I might not be able to understand where you’re coming from and what you’ve been through, but I know that you and all your humanness are worthy of compassion, kindness and support
Ethical - As a Social Worker I have a code of ethics to uphold, as well as my own personal morals and values. I think it’s important to always be mindful of these considerations when working alongside others. I hope this post helps you to better understand some of the values I bring to therapy
Evidence-Based - I am committed to learning and growing in my practice. I do my best to seek out trainings and teachers that are diverse, ethical, and well-established in their work and their practices.
Curious - I aim to be open and non-judgemental, and I will encourage you to be reflective and inquisitive as well. We only know as much as we know, beyond that there is so much more to learn. I will help you hold space for new perspectives and new practices to try out as you explore your story, process your experiences, build on your strengths, and tend to your growth

🌀Triggers are echos of past experiences🌀

A trigger can be anything that reminds us of a past experience: something you sense (see/hear/taste/smell/feel), an emotion, a thought, sometimes it doesn’t seem like anything at all. Stress and trauma can leave us with deep triggers and difficult reactions to them

A trigger usually causes a change in the nervous system: fight/flight/freeze

Our triggered reactions can leave us feeling out of control, disconnected in mind & body, and in relationship with others

Healing our triggers often requires ongoing effort. Over time and with practice coping with triggers can become easier, we might find ourselves having to do it less often, and the work might not have to be as concentrated

Our efforts often have to be layered: grounding in the body, sitting with our emotions, challenging our thoughts, and tending to the Self

Counselling can help you build on the tools that bring you back into your body and quiet the echos of your past experiences

“Look for the silver lining”
Trauma doesn’t happen to so that we can learn from it. Yet, there are so many lessons to be learned when we embark on a path toward healing
Through counselling you might start to find the silver lining because of your efforts, your dedication to you, your ability to find new perspective on your experiences, and your practices…not because of the trauma or stress you endured.

The vernal equinox moves us into the season of spring
Can you use this time to reflect on your growth through this past season?
You might consider these prompts as you reflect:
∙Have I been honouring my needs?
∙What progress have I made toward my goals?
∙Do I need support to help me move forward?
∙What do I want/need to put my energy toward right now?

Our breath can bring us home; home to the here and now, home to your body, home to your heart, home to your head, home to the Self
Mindful breathing can help us connect with all parts ourselves and act in our true nature
When we are not mindful we may be more reactive, our defences might automatically take over before we have a moment to make choice in our actions, we might go into autopilot and reacted in patterns that aren’t helpful in the end (addictions, attachment patterns, aggression, etc)
Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us a lot about mindfulness. May his passing yesterday serve as a reminder to take pause, to breathe, and to be here.l

If you follow the cycle of the seasons, you know that eventually everything will change
I look forward to the Winter Solstice each year because it means that the days start to transition from getting shorter to longer, it gets brighter from here
Even though we know that things will get lighter and brighter, we’re still facing long, dark days for a while
It’s okay if you’re still feeling the darkness, even if you know that the light is coming; thinking and feeling are different mechanisms of being, they don’t always match up
Counselling can help you find peace with the darkness, while finding threads of light to keep weaving throughout your story
It’s not all light and love all the time; it’s important that we make room to accept the darker times instead of denying their existence
Counselling can help us integrate all aspects of our experiences and find ways to embrace everything that come on both the light and dark days

Healing is hard work!
We can make leaps and bounds when we work hard on our well-being
Sometimes when we go through these shifts as we’re doing our work we start to look back at how we have been, at what we have moved away from and we judge
But you didn’t know then what you know now, so you can’t blame yourself for how you reacted then
Just because you have learned to cope in ways that align better with a healthier life doesn’t mean that you weren’t doing your best with what you had before
When we know better we can do better, but we can’t judge ourselves for what we didn’t know before we knew it
Non-judgement is an important aspect of mindfulness; it allows us to detach from toxic thoughts that can fog our experience of the present moment
Non-judgement can help release us from ties to the past, from shame and stigma about how we have been
Non-judgement helps us relate better with ourselves and it helps build compassion both inwardly and outwardly
Reach out if you want to make space to meet yourself in a non-judgemental way

Mental health memes and tic toks are all the rage right now (Mom, did you see that, I said “all the rage” in 2021 🙃)
It’s so important that we are talking about, normalizing, and validating each others’ experiences of mental and emotional well-being and challenges
Please, be mindful as you scroll though
A mental health diagnosis can’t be summed up in a cute, quick little meme, or in a 30 second video
These shares are so important! They bring us together, the open our minds, they give us some great information to go off of
They don’t, however, have the space to provide the bigger picture
I don’t do diagnosing in my practice as a therapist, but there are some amazing doctors, psychiatrists, psychologist, etc that do
You don’t need a diagnosis for your symptoms to be valid, sometimes our symptoms are acute and don’t need long-term intervention, sometimes they do
Working with a counsellor can help you build strategies for coping as you continue to build your understanding of the ways your mental and emotional selves respond to the happenings of the world around and within you
Reach out if you would like some support in sorting it all out, or if you’d like to be pointed in the right direction for a diagnosis
I’m happy to help:

It’s been over a year since I started seeing folks at Insight Counselling & Holistic Therapy so perhaps it’s time I properly introduce myself!

Hi! 👋 I’m Steph Locke (she/they)! I’m a social worker and yoga teacher growing my roots and a trauma-informed counselling practice here in Saskatchewan🌾 I have the privilege of living and working on the traditional lands of the Cree Peoples and Homeland of the Métis Nation, in what’s known today as Saskatoon. Being here feels like being home🏡 I love exploring the Prairies, learning to grow my garden here, and being on the South Saskatchewan.

I grew up in a quiet neighbourhood in Windsor, ON and somehow gained lots of interesting life experience along the way🤷‍♀️ I’ve been carving my path as a counsellor over the past 17 years, working mostly for non-profit groups.

My passion for trauma-informed care has grown with inspiration from each person who has trusted me to be present with them on their journey through life🧡💜

The more I embrace my yoga 🧘‍♂️ practice, the more I recognize the importance of maintaining wellness in all aspects of the self: the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies. This has been the inspiration for my holistic practice. Nervous system health is a huge factor in wellness, especially in healing trauma. Breath and body work compliment talk therapy so much! ☯️

A few fun things about me:
*I have ADHD; my yoga practice🧎helps me to slow down and running🏃‍♀️ helps me to get out excess energy (and meds help me focus💊)
*I’m a caregiver: to my child👩‍👦, to my dog🐶, to my houseplants🪴, and to Mother Earth🌍
* I’ll always be a student in life, learning something with each opportunity presented to me👩‍🎓
* Potatoes are my favourite food, their diversity is a beautiful thing 🥔
* Early in my career as a counsellor at my chair broke as I was in session with someone, I slid down to the floor as my seat broke and it was the best icebreaker (don’t expect antics like this at your appointment, but also don’t not expect antics like that either, ya never know what could happen 😅)
* My son wants to choose some ‘stickers’: 🔮🦠🤖👰‍♂️

Sometimes we overcomplicate the idea of mindfulness
I’ve found that folks tend to think it means to think/feel nothing, or that it requires a complex, consistent meditation practice
Mindfulness can be as simple as noticing that you aren’t present/focused/aware; this is the moment when you can see mindfulness in action, as you are becoming mindful once again
Mindfulness is effortful, yet gentle
It comes with non-judgement and compassion
It’s a constant practice (especially for people who have busier minds)
Like anything, the more you practice mindfulness the more you progress forward with this beautiful skill in your tool box
What are your thoughts on mindfulness?
These thoughts/this quote were inspired by conversations with Michael (who I don’t think is on IG, but if so tag him) from
(I can’t wait to get into another week of yoga teacher training for this month)

Acceptance
When we accept ourselves, our experiences, others, the state of the world, whatever it is…we aren’t saying that those things are necessarily okay
We often have to come to a place of acceptance in order to help us move forward in healing whatever it is that ails us
Denying things that have happened tends to leave us in denial of their impacts
It’s helpful when we can name it if we want to tame it
I’m happy to hold space for you to process events of your life, so that you can give yourself some space for acceptance and peace

Resilience
I accidentally stepped on the stem of this flower last week, but it has found a way to keep blooming (even more beautifully than it was before, actually)
It’s a reminder to keep growing
