Updated post: Why do we need to open a discussion around recreation and leisure and 2SLGBTQ+ ? Why does it matter?

Unfortunately there is very little research on the impacts of recreation and leisure and the needs for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. But what research does show is the mental health impacts that 2SLGBTQ+ experience.

One of the key areas a recreation therapist looks at is social connection, and those that identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are at higher risks for being isolated and experiencing the negative effects of social isolation (Angus Reid, 2019).

2SLGBTQIA+ individuals (particularly transgender and nonbinary people) continue to face barriers to safe and inclusive recreational spaces. These barriers include stigma, discrimination, inaccessibility, and policies that exclude or erase identity.

Trans individuals report disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and social isolation. These challenges are only intensified when identity-based exclusion limits access to life-enriching, healing, and joy-driven activities like recreation and leisure.

Lack of inclusive programming, ongoing prejudice, and institutional decisions (here’s looking at our provincial government and the Saskatchewan Party’s ongoing anti-trans rhetoric), continue to send the message that these communities don’t belong. But they do.

As recreation therapists and community advocates, we must challenge this exclusion and affirm that recreation is a human right … for everyone.

And don’t forget: July is Disability Pride Month! Many q***r and trans folks also live with disabilities … I’ll have more in July on that!

Humor. I use it every day. It’s my go to coping mechanism. Some may say it can be deflective in nature, or a poor coping skill — especially if it’s dark humor. Here’s the thing, I know for myself that if I can not laugh, and I can not find the comedy in a situation, then there is a bigger problem for me. I have told multiple people that if a time comes where I can not laugh about something, then I’m honestly not well.
Humor and laughing gives us reprieve in those moments where the weight of everything seems too much. It gives us a second to breathe when we may be holding our breath (figuratively speaking). Laughing reminds us that there is more than just the negative emotions in life.
I will never stop attempting to make people light. And for some individuals’ chagrin, I’ll continue to awkwardly make jokes in tense situations … and I’m not going to apologize for it.

This post goes out to my fellow recreation therapists and TR professionals.

We work in a field that many haven’t heard of, understand, or fully value. Many of us spend a vast majority of our time just advocating for this profession so that our clients and patients can access recreation therapy services. Rarely do we meet a fellow healthcare worker that truly understands the work we do, and impact we have. Our work is misunderstood and seen as time-fillers, boredom reducers, party planners … the “fun and games people”. Many of us see regularly the impact we can have, and areas in our health systems we can support - but then dismissed or ignored. This can be exhausting. Frustrating. Defeating.

But we know why we continue to show up every day. We know why we continue to advocate for this field. We know why recreation therapy matters for the health of our communities.

We show up for the woman with postpartum depression that doesn’t know who she is anymore outside of being someone’s mom.

We show up for the man that had a stroke, who loved being retired and golfing with this friend, and didn’t think he could swing a golf club ever again.

We show up for the teen that experienced a spinal cord injury and isolated himself from his friends because he thought he was too different now.

We show up for the lady that has dementia, and is said to have “behaviours” after being moved into a care home away from her friends and family and routine.

We show up for 28 year old that has only known how to be social and feel accepted while being intoxicated and partying.

We show up for the person that is newly immigrated, misses their home and family and friends, and can’t quite figure out why they’re not enjoying life like they used to.

We show up, and we give space to individuals and see what they are capable of, not what they’ve lost.

So, remember you made an impact on people’s lives. And even if you don’t think it matters to others, it matters to those we’ve supported and helped.

So, if you’re willing to share, what was something that you accomplished in 2024 as a recreation therapist?

A repost from a couple years back:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Or is it?

The stated in a survey they conducted that 52% of Canadians feel the holidays are NOT the most wonderful time of the year for them.
They also reported that 25% of women feel depressed, 25% of Canadians have increase anxiety, and calls to the youth hotline jumps by 23% (Butler, 2021).

This is the time of the year that we’re supposed to feel the most joyous, the most connected, the most grateful, the most (fill in the blank) … but we don’t.

Why?

If we’re taking part in the things that are supposed to be making us feel good, then why do we feel just the opposite?

There’s multiple reasons for this, but one of the major reasons is due to holiday burnout.

We go, go, go.

Our to-do lists suddenly seem endless.

We are constantly asking each-other “are you ready for Christmas?” as if it’s a race to the finish line.

We over-extend our social calendar (and our bank accounts).

We rarely take the time to just sit back and enjoy this time of year.

If this resonates with you … may I suggest taking a moment (or five), and asking yourself “am I joyful this time of year, or joyless?”. And depending on how you answer that, it may be time to step back a moment and look at how you approach this time of year.

In the mean time … take a moment, grab yourself a warm cup of coffee/tea, and just breath (I promise stopping for a moment won’t ruin the holidays).

June is National Indigenous History Month; a month dedicated to recognizing and learning about the culture, history, traditions, and how First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples of today are not only impacted, but moving towards strengthening their culture and identity.

The nuance of leisure and recreation for the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (Canada/North America), cannot be thoroughly gone through in a single post. The vast and intricate history of the importance and practice, of what we deem as leisure and recreation activities, takes more than 9 images.

As a healthcare provider that uses leisure and recreation to meet health and wellness goals, it is my duty to ensure I understand the history and current ways that leisure and recreation impact the First Nations and Metis people I support. Having a firm understanding of the domains of wellness, and the cultural practices that impact those domains, is a responsibility I take seriously.

I urge recreation therapy professionals, healthcare providers, and the general public to take this next month to listen to Indigenous voices, and learn.

There is nothing wrong loving what you do, and doing what you love.

What may be work to one person, is another individual’s opportunity to experience growth, challenge, and excitement.

Whether it be in our work or in our recreation, ensuring that what we are doing with our time isn’t causing us to be unwell, is more important then determining whether or not someone’s else’s “fun” is “fun” to you.
