Updated post: Why do we need to open a discussion around recreation and leisure and 2SLGBTQ+ ? Why does it matter?
Unfortunately there is very little research on the impacts of recreation and leisure and the needs for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. But what research does show is the mental health impacts that 2SLGBTQ+ experience.
One of the key areas a recreation therapist looks at is social connection, and those that identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are at higher risks for being isolated and experiencing the negative effects of social isolation (Angus Reid, 2019).
2SLGBTQIA+ individuals (particularly transgender and nonbinary people) continue to face barriers to safe and inclusive recreational spaces. These barriers include stigma, discrimination, inaccessibility, and policies that exclude or erase identity.
Trans individuals report disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and social isolation. These challenges are only intensified when identity-based exclusion limits access to life-enriching, healing, and joy-driven activities like recreation and leisure.
Lack of inclusive programming, ongoing prejudice, and institutional decisions (here’s looking at our provincial government and the Saskatchewan Party’s ongoing anti-trans rhetoric), continue to send the message that these communities don’t belong. But they do.
As recreation therapists and community advocates, we must challenge this exclusion and affirm that recreation is a human right … for everyone.
And don’t forget: July is Disability Pride Month! Many q***r and trans folks also live with disabilities … I’ll have more in July on that!
