Back-to-school season means new routines, busy mornings, and, unfortunately, more germs. But there are simple, natural ways to support your kids’ (and your own!) immune system.

▪️Mindful handwashing – Take 20–30 seconds, wash with warm water, and use it as a little reset moment for both hygiene and calm.

▪️Nourishing foods – Bright fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and fermented foods support gut health and immunity.

▪️Herbal remedies – Elderberry, echinacea, or astragalus can help strengthen resilience (always use under guidance).

▪️Sleep matters – Consistent bedtimes and calm bedtime routines give the immune system the rest it needs.

▪️Reset Moments – Short pauses, deep breaths, outdoor play, or gentle movement help regulate the nervous system and support overall health.

Small, consistent steps like these can make a big difference in keeping your family healthy and resilient this school season.

The mental load of motherhood is real—packing lunches, remembering appointments, juggling work, keeping the house running, and still trying to have a little time for yourself. This constant “go, go, go” can leave you feeling exhausted and your nervous system in overdrive.

But here’s some good news - nervous system regulation doesn’t always require a full hour of self-care. It’s about finding small, grounding moments in your everyday routines:

▪️Hand-washing resets – While scrubbing sticky toddler paint off your hands, pause for 30 seconds. Take a breath, feel your feet on the floor, and give your nervous system a mini reset.

▪️Bedtime wind-down – After the chaos of baths, pajamas, and “one more story,” add in a simple routine for you—a calming tea, reading a few pages of a book, or gentle stretches before bed.

▪️Herbal support – Adaptogens like ashwagandha can help buffer stress, while nervines like lemon balm or lavender calm the nervous system.

▪️Micro-moments of movement – Push the stroller around the block, do a few squats while waiting for dinner to cook, or dance in the kitchen with your kids—movement + fresh air are powerful regulators.

▪️Nutrition upgrades – It doesn’t have to be complicated. Keep cut-up veggies or protein-rich snacks handy so you’re fueling your body (not just finishing cold chicken nuggets).

These small, intentional practices give your nervous system little breaks throughout the day—helping you show up with more energy, patience, and calm.

There are many ways to support your body’s stress response.

Often we talk about ways to reduce stress like delegating tasks, getting proper sleep, and other helpful tools and actions we can take, but did you know that you can support your body’s stress response from the inside out?

Certain herbs have been shown to help regulate our stress response and bring balance to the nervous system:
Adaptogenic Herbs:
Ashwagandha – An adaptogen that helps regulate cortisol, supports energy through the day, and promotes more restful sleep at night.
Rhodiola – Known for improving mental clarity, stamina, and resilience, especially during times of fatigue or burnout.
Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero) – Helps the body adapt to ongoing stress and supports endurance and immune function.

Nervine Herbs:
Lavender – A gentle nervine herb that calms the nervous system, reduces anxious thoughts, and promotes relaxation.
Melissa (Lemon Balm) – Soothes the mind, eases nervous tension, and can support digestion that’s often impacted by stress.
Avena Sativa (Oat Straw/Milky Oats) – Nourishes the nervous system, supports recovery from long-term stress, and helps restore a sense of calm.

These herbs can be wonderful allies when chosen and used appropriately. The best approach is individualized, so it’s always a good idea to work with a naturopathic doctor for guidance on which are most supportive for you.

Preparing your immune system for flu season starts now.

Naturopathic medicine is proactive and preventative, which means we don’t only address the current symptom. Instead, I work with patients to strengthen their foundations so that they can easily fight off common colds and flus without experiencing the symptoms.

With back to school and flu seasons right around the corner, now is the time to start looking at ways to strengthen your immune system.

You may not think twice about scented candles or your favourite laundry detergent, but they could be having more of an impact on your health than you expected.

Exposure to synthetic fragrances which are commonly found in perfumes, air fresheners, cleaning products, and laundry detergents—can impact hormone balance. Over time, this contributes to estrogen regulation, worsened PMS symptoms, and added strain on the liver.

Because the liver plays a key role in processing hormones, any additional burden from environmental toxins can make PMS symptoms worse.

Simple ways to reduce exposure:
• Choose unscented or naturally fragranced products
• Avoid air fresheners and scented candles
• Swap plastic food containers for glass or stainless steel

Reducing toxic load can lessen the burden on your body and improve hormonal symptoms over time. If you have questions about detoxification or would like to learn more, book an appointment with me at Origin Chiropractic!

We are half way through summer and you’re likely already seeing posts and ads for a ‘post summer cleanse or detox’ that sells you teas and pills with the promise of erasing all the sugar, alcohol, s’mores, and chips from your dietary history.

Here is the problem: detoxification isn’t something you do once a year—it’s something your body is doing every day.

Organs like the liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, lymphatic system, and colon work continuously to process and eliminate toxins.

However, this system can become sluggish when it’s overburdened by poor nutrition, environmental exposures, stress, and lack of movement.

What supports detoxification?
• Nutrient-rich, whole foods
• Hydration
• Daily movement (especially walking, breathwork, or lymphatic support)
• Consistent, restful sleep

You don’t need extreme protocols, another supplement, or a fancy cleanse, you just need consistent support of your body’s natural systems.

I have a lot of resources available on my website regarding detoxification or if you’d like 1:1 support, book an appointment with me at Origin Chiropractic and Wellness.

Did you know hormones don’t cause chaos on their own? They respond to your environment, nutrition, stress levels, and detox capacity.
Some common signs your hormones may need support:
• Mood changes, especially premenstrually
• Fatigue, particularly after ovulation
• Breast tenderness or heavy cycles
These symptoms often reflect imbalances in blood sugar, mineral status, or your body’s ability to clear excess estrogen.
It’s not about controlling your hormones - it’s about creating the right conditions for them to function properly.
When we support foundational systems like detoxification, nervous system regulation, and nutrient status, hormone symptoms often improve.
