I know you have probably seen ‘plant-based’ diets a million times in your google searches but here is why I don’t ascribe to that way of eating for those of us with arthritis.
Vegan diets often do not provide adequate complete protein to maintain muscle mass as we age, which is crucial to prevent further tissue breakdown and reduce the adverse effects of both aging and chronic illness.
Vegan protein sources do not contain the full spectrum of amino acids that the body needs, and they also contain toxic lectins such as prolamines and agglutinins that damage that gut lining (leading to more symptoms). Vegan protein sources also contain digestive enzyme inhibitors that interfere with the absorption of nutrients from our food (and can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies).
Lastly, both the elderly and the chronically ill frequently suffer from muscle wasting. This is a big deal because decreased muscle mass as we age is one of the primary drivers of death and disability in older adults.
In the Anti-Arthritis Method program, I instead focus on guiding my clients through the process of eating foods that reduce their symptoms, eliminating foods that have been secretly contributing to their pain (even healthy ones), and creating their most comprehensive diet to support their health and keep their joint pain away for the long term.
This allows you to have some control over your arthritis symptoms instead of being at the mercy of your condition.

Because I am completely immersed in the world of arthritis, I have insights into common issues that may not be obvious to others who don’t get to see the patterns that I see after working so closely with so many different people.
#1 Using meds, alone, is not a long-term solution for symptom management
#2 A vegan, ‘anti-inflammatory’, or Mediterranean diet, is not ideal for arthritis

Not everyone who registers for the Anti-Arthritis Method gets the results they are looking for.
My program is not for everyone and one of the reasons I schedule an Arthritis Breakthrough Call before working with my clients is so that I can determine if they are a right fit for what I do.
I have people who get on a call with me who are ready to hand me their money, but after talking with them for a bit I come to understand that they are not a good fit and I decline their interest in working with me.
You see, I have no desire to enroll people who are not going to succeed with my program.
That doesn’t do anybody any good.
Even with the call in place there are a few people that slip by and end up not getting the results they are looking for…that's normal in every program… but I do my very best to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Before beginning the Anti-Arthritis Method program, Brenda was suffering from swelling in her leg, ankle and foot.
By the end of the day, she had no energy left to do anything but the basics at home.
She would have to sit with her leg elevated and use ice and heat to get comfortable.
Brenda had previously seen a couple of rheumatologists who couldn’t agree on the type of arthritis that she was suffering from, but both agreed on treating her with a series of very powerful medications - unfortunately they made her feel ill and gave her high blood pressure.
Brenda had been searching for something that she could do to help herself, but there is a lot of information out there and she wasn’t sure where to start!

It doesn’t come easy for me…
I sometimes get the feeling that people might think that because I teach about managing arthritis naturally, that I have everything all figured out and I don’t ever need to worry about having a flare-up anymore.
While it’s true that most days are pretty good and I have a solid plan in place to keep my health on track…
I DO need to work for it.
There are many days that I wake up and I have no desire to cook a healthy meal.
To be honest, I would much rather eat whatever I felt like at any given time, BUT…
Right now, THIS is my reality and I KNOW what it is I need to do to be at my best for myself and the people I’m closest to.
Sometimes you are not going to want to eat the foods that will keep your joint pain away.
Sometimes you are not going to batch cook and have joint-friendly meals on hand at all times.
And that’s ok, because it's not about pretending that arthritis doesn’t exist anymore…
It’s about learning and practicing, and getting better at the skills and habits that make it less and less of a problem in your life.

She had pain and swelling in her fingers, hands, and feet, and her doctor wanted her to start taking methotrexate.
She had high blood pressure and inflammation in her body, and her doctor was advising her to lose weight.

Hi, I’m Jessica! I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist with a background in Social Work. I have always had a passion to help others improve their lives, and after working 11 years in the human services field, I realized that I wanted to focus on helping people improve their health. You could say that health, fitness, and nutrition have been a bit of an obsession of mine for as long as I can remember. I was doing step aerobics in my basement when I was twelve years old and lifting weights at the local civic centre at age 15. It has always intrigued me how food can contribute to, or diminish, our physical and mental states. My insatiable curiosity about food and wellness led me to Holistic Nutrition, an approach that takes into account how a person’s diet, body systems, lifestyle, and mental health, are all interconnected. Through a thorough assessment of these factors and collaboration with my clients, I create custom dietary, supplement, and lifestyle plans that cater to their unique needs and address their main health concerns. One of my biggest accomplishments has been creating a diet and lifestyle plan for myself that has put a budding autoimmune condition into remission. I truly believe, and have experienced, that there are ways to effectively address physical and mental health concerns by making nutritional and lifestyle changes.
