Car seat safety in 1958. Not strapped in to anything, these seats relied on the mother to put her arm out and stop the baby from falling forward.

🚑 Remote First Aid Training – Coming This Summer!

Our Remote First Aid course is all about preparing before the emergency. We focus on trip planning, risk management, and making smart decisions in remote settings where help isn’t just minutes away.

🗓️ Summer dates are in the works—stay tuned for updates!

Whether you’re a hiker, guide, camper, or just love the outdoors, this training is for you. 💪🌲

This spring, search and rescue teams across BC have responded to too many hikers caught off guard, some guided into dangerous terrain by AI and trail apps. For example, ChatGPT might give you trail ideas but not mention snow conditions without a specific prompt—and even then, the information might be inaccurate.

ORCBC’s Ryan Stuart reminds us that increased access to nature is amazing, but it can’t replace experience or education. Technology can be a powerful tool but we all need to be aware of its limitations.

Before you head out, ask yourself:
✔️ Do I have the skills for this route?
✔️ Do I know the current trail conditions?
✔️ What’s my backup if tech fails?

In first aid, we never suggest that first aiders diagnose bone, muscle, and joint injuries. We immobilizein place and seek medical attention. Once they arrive at a medical facility, a X-Ray is the first course of action for muscle skeletal injuries.

On November 8, 1885, 138 years ago, Wilhelm Röntgen, a German Physicist, asked his wife to place her hand in front of a photographic plate, and activated the Crookes tube. The image of his wife’s hand and wedding band, was a definite proof that Röntgen found a means to look inside the human body, and thus discovered the X-Ray.

Today we celebrate and are thankful for these medical discoveries!

First aid doesn't have to be dull, as seen in today's First Aid for Life class with creative librarians who did arts and crafts during breaks. 🤣

Celebrating true humanitarians, Canadian scientists Banting and MacLeod, who discovered insulin and sold the patent for a $1.

In 1922, a group of scientists went into Toronto General Hospital, where about 50 diabetic children were lying comatose on what were effectively their death beds. The scientists injected them with a new purified extract of insulin. As they injected the last child, the first one to be injected woke up. Then, one by one, all the children awoke from their comas. The scientists, Banting and MacLeod, won Nobel Prizes for their work and sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for $1 so that all the world could benefit. Here is one of the activites we do in the 2-day Standard First Aid course! In groups, participants get in touch with their inner child and get their creative juices flowing to make a comic strip about Wound Care!
