Elmwood’s Community Inclusion Program (CIP) is proud to support Red Dress Day and will be creating and selling red shirts to raise awareness and support this incredibly important movement. These custom shirts will feature the design shown below. These limited-edition shirts are available in Youth sizes XS to XL for $20 each and Adult sizes S to 3XL for $25 each. 👕

These shirts are made by CIP’s Entrepreneur Group and all profits will be donated to Iskwewuk E-wichiwitochik (Women Walking Together), a Saskatoon based non-profit that raises awareness about the human rights crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. 💖

Meet Our April VIP: Yvonne R. from our Supportive Independent Living Program (SILP)! 💖

If you’ve attended any of our Elmwood events, like the Family Luau or Slip ‘n’ Slide, chances are you’ve met Yvonne! Often stopping by on her way to the Community Inclusion Program, Yvonne is always ready to show off her newest accessory or share stories from her weekend adventures.

A familiar and beloved presence in the Saskatoon community, Yvonne was proudly recognized with the SARC Spirit Award in 2023, a testament to the positivity and joy she brings wherever she goes. ✨

Creativity shines through in everything Yvonne does. From her vibrant rainbow outfits, complete with her signature hair clips, to her beautiful arts and crafts, including drawings, paintings, bracelets, and keychains, her artistic flair is unmistakable.

Yvonne’s vibrant personality extends to her love of tattoos, and she’s always dreaming up her next design. Fearless and adventurous, she even checked off a bucket-list goal by riding a motorcycle in 2024! 🏍

Yvonne, you are truly one of a kind. We’re so lucky to have you as part of our Elmwood family!

While our Supportive Independent Living Program (SILP) team loves getting out into the community for activities, one of the core purposes of the program is building everyday skills that support independent living. 🫶

Last week, our SILP participants had an exciting learning opportunity as we welcomed our friends from Affinity CU for an Introduction to Basic Banking session. Participants learned practical skills like how to write a cheque, the different types of bank accounts, and how to make informed financial decisions. ✨

It was a great learning experience. Thank you to the Affinity Credit Union team for supporting our SILP crew and helping build confidence in financial literacy! 💖

Why leave a legacy gift? Legacy giving comes with some great benefits, beyond the satisfaction in knowing that you are supporting a cause you care about. 💖

One of the biggest benefits of legacy giving is that it allows you to give without taking away from your daily needs. Legacy giving won’t dip into your vacation fund or your nest egg, since it is processed after your passing.

There are also some great financial benefits, in the form of a charitable tax credit. After you pass, all your assets will be realized and counted as income, and your family will be left with the taxes owed by your estate. When you include a donation in your will, it triggers a charitable tax credit, which can decrease or even eliminate these taxes. ✨

Legacy giving can also help your family, outside of just financially. With a legacy gift, the causes and values that were important to you in life carry on, giving your family an amazing way to remember you.

Meet Our March VIP, Jamie R.! 🫶

Jamie joined our Elmwood community in 2010, quickly becoming known for his kindness and compassion.

He approaches everything he does with dedication and heart, whether it’s his work with SaskAbilities Saskatoon Branch, or his involvement with Special Olympics Saskatchewan - Saskatoon sports. Jamie is an active participant in the SOS Walk Club, 5‑Pin Bowling, Soccer, and Floor Hockey. 👟🎳⚽🏒

One of Jamie’s proudest achievements was traveling to Seoul, South Korea for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games as part of the floor hockey team and bringing home the gold medal!

When he’s not playing sports, Jamie loves cheering on his favourite teams, especially the Saskatoon Blades and the Toronto Blue Jays. 📣

Family is also very important to Jamie, and he never misses his Saturday night sleepovers with his parents.

Jamie, thank you for helping our Elmwood family shine brighter! ✨

Today is World Down Syndrome Day! 📆

This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” shines a light on an experience many of us know well and one that research shows people with intellectual disabilities face at significantly higher rates.

Loneliness isn’t inevitable. One of the most powerful ways we can address it is through meaningful inclusion. 💖

Meaningful inclusion is more than opening a door or offering an invitation. It’s about genuinely engaging with people, valuing their contributions, and creating environments where everyone feels supported, welcomed, and connected.

Today, take a moment to reflect on how you can weave meaningful inclusion into your daily life. Together, we can make inclusion not just an ideal but a reality for everyone. 🫶
