Anxiety often isn’t about what’s happening — it’s about what your body is bracing for.

For many adults, anxiety shows up as a constant sense of anticipation — even when nothing is actively wrong.

This happens because the nervous system has learned to stay prepared after periods of stress or uncertainty.

When anxiety is present, the body is already responding to a threat that hasn’t arrived yet.

Rather than trying to calm your thoughts, help your nervous system discharge that stored readiness.

Try this “anticipation release” exercise (90 seconds):
• Stand or sit with both feet on the floor
• Gently tense your legs and glutes for 5 seconds
• Release completely and let the body soften
• Repeat 3 times
• After the final release, notice the sensation of heaviness or warmth in your legs

This signals to the nervous system that action is no longer required and reduces the “on edge” feeling anxiety creates.

Anxiety doesn’t need convincing — it needs completion.

Keep this technique in mind for when your body feels tense or restless.

Sometimes kids act “fine” — until they suddenly aren’t.

Many children hold it together all day at school or activities and then unravel at home.

This isn’t defiance or manipulation — it’s delayed release.

Home is where they finally feel safe enough to let it out.

Instead of trying to shut the behaviour down, help them build awareness of what’s happening inside.

Try this emotional mapping exercise:
• Ask your child: “Where do you feel that in your body?”
• Help them name it (tight chest, heavy stomach, fast heart)
• Normalize it: “That makes sense after a long day.”

This builds emotional literacy and teaches kids that feelings are signals — not problems.

Over time, children who can notice and name sensations regulate faster and feel more in control.

Save this for after-school or bedtime meltdowns.

You don’t have to relive your trauma to heal it.

EMDR works differently than traditional talk therapy.

It helps your brain and nervous system:
• reprocess stuck memories
• reduce emotional charge
• calm trauma responses
• create relief — not just insight

Vanessa Birch has completed advanced international EMDR certification, meaning your care is grounded in extensive training, supervision, and real-world practice.

If talk therapy hasn’t been enough —
this may be the next step.

Stress reduces emotional flexibility.

When conversations feel tense, soften the start.

Maybe your teen isn’t “being difficult.”
They might be overwhelmed.

Teens dealing with trauma, anxiety, identity questions, grief, or emotional overwhelm don’t always have the words for what they’re carrying.

Vanessa Birch works with teens ages 13–18 using trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR, to help them:
• regulate emotions
• process painful experiences
• reduce anxiety and anger
• build confidence and self-esteem

Parents often tell us:
“Something finally shifted.”

January is hard for kids with ADHD — and it’s not about motivation.

ADHD brains struggle most during transitions.

Support regulation first.

Try this:
• 2 minutes of movement
• THEN focus-based tasks

Movement creates readiness.

Anxiety often increases after busy seasons.

During high-demand periods, adrenaline carries us.
When things slow down, anxiety rises.

This is delayed processing — not failure.

Try this physiological reset:
• Two short inhales through the nose
• One long exhale through the mouth
Repeat 3 times.

This tells your body the threat has passed.
Follow along this January for daily tips to help you feel calmer, more connected, and in control. Let’s make this your most peaceful year yet.

Not every argument is about the argument.

Stress reduces emotional flexibility.
When we’re depleted, neutral moments can feel threatening.

Before responding, pause and ask yourself:
“Is this about stress — or about us?”

That pause alone often softens the moment.

If your mind feels louder in January...there's a reason for it.
When external busyness drops, internal noise rises.
Thoughts you didn’t have space for finally surface.

This doesn’t mean things are getting worse — it means you’re finally hearing yourself.

Instead of pushing thoughts away, contain them.

Try this:
• On a piece of paper, write down everything on your mind
• Don’t organize it...just let everything flow out
• Fold the paper and say: “This is held for now.”

Containment reduces overwhelm more effectively than problem-solving. Writing your thoughts down and getting them out of your head gives your brain a break. It doesn't have to remember everything...and it can rest a bit.

Follow us for your daily dose of calm. Each day this month, we're sharing one small shift that can make a big difference to your wellbeing.

Feeling anxious, restless, or constantly “on edge”?

Many of us carry a lot quietly—work pressures, family responsibilities, immigration stress, and the feeling that we must always stay strong. Over time, this can show up as anxiety:
• constant worry
• difficulty sleeping
• racing thoughts
• tension in the body

You don’t have to manage this alone.

Dr. Apurva Mathur, Registered Psychologist (Prov), offers a warm, supportive space for adults experiencing anxiety. She understands the cultural values many of us grow up with—and how hard it can be to ask for help.

Counselling is private, respectful, and focused on helping you feel calmer, more grounded, and more like yourself again.

📞 If anxiety has been weighing on you, reaching out can be the first gentle step forward.

Apurva offers private counselling sessions for adults Mon-Sat from 9 am - 4:30 pm. Your work with Apurva will be covered by your insurance/extended benefits!

When children are anxious, reassurance can accidentally keep anxiety alive.

What helps more is co-regulation — lending your calm until their system settles.

Try this:
• Sit close
• Match their breathing
• Say: “Your body feels worried. I’m here. Let’s slow it down together.”

Children learn safety through experience, not explanation.

Save this for anxious moments.
