Let’s talk about stretching. If your child has cerebral palsy (or any other condition with spasticity) do you spend time stretching them or doing range of motion exercises?

Most doctors and therapists encourage this, and tell parents to do this daily. But does it really make sense? The spasticity is a result of the brain telling these muscles to contract. By stretching the muscle it isn’t TEACHING the brain to stop firing, but rather to send more impulses, actually increasing the spasticity and making it more habitual! The muscles have ZERO control over what they are doing, so why are we trying to change the muscles??

What if we focused on trying to help the brain realize that it doesn’t need to send the contraction signals in the first place? This is where NeuroMovement comes in. We focus on giving the brain new information that might allow a different outcome. Through gentle variations the brain can organize new movements instead of relying on old patterns. Stop forcing, start learning.

Conventional wisdom might call it blog su***de to suggest negatives about a practice that probably 90% of parents do with their babies (n.b. – a very unscientific survey). Is it really worth the grief to get into it? After struggling with this for a while now, my passion for natural gross motor de...

The brain can not only change itself, but it can also heal itself in ways we never thought were possible. Dr. Norman Doidge looks at how energy — light, sound, electricity and motion — awaken the brain's own capacity to heal.
