Jenn Markosky from Speech Therapy Saskatoon is now offering More Than Words® Hanen Program Offered via Telepractice.

More Than Words® is a program developed for parents of young children (under age five) with autism or social communication difficulties. A Hanen-certified speech-language pathologist leads the program, which is offered to parents in a group setting. Hanen was started in 1972 and is considered best practice in Speech and Language therapy for children with Autism.

By learning in a small group with other parents, you get support and input from people who understand what you are going through. Not only do you walk away from the program armed with strategies that are proven to improve your child’s social communication skills, but you also gain a valuable support network of peers.

Jenn has led the More Than Words® program for 16 years and worked with children on the Autism Spectrum for over 25 years. In this program she will guide you every step of the way, helping you learn specific, research-based interaction strategies that you can use in your daily interactions with your child. All these strategies are drawn from research and have been shown to improve the social communication skills of children on the autism spectrum.

🚌Pre-Kindergarten and preschool? They’re the same right? What if I told you that they actually aren’t and that the difference could matter for your family?

Like most things, choosing which one is best for your child is going to depend on your own personal needs. The biggest difference is in the funding.

🍎PreKINDERGARTENS are government funded. They were initially started to help children that needed a little boost prior to kindergarten entry. Because they are government funded, they are regulated which means the teachers need a teaching degree. There is also potential for support within the context of the ELIS program (you have to apply separately). Both Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Saskatoon Public Schools have Pre-Ks. Unfortunately, unless your child is accepted into ELIS, they will not receive support in terms of an educational assistant (EA - aka an adult to help), hearing screenings, speech therapy, or occupational therapy because of funding cuts.

🍏Preschools on the other hand are often community funded- meaning you’re probably going to pay to have your child attend- and if they’re cooperative, you’re likely going to need to volunteer. There is also not support available in most pre-schools. A teaching degree is not required (although the teacher may still have one). Don’t let that scare you though - there are some absolutely fantastic preschools out there.

👉🏻As you’ve probably guessed, if you have a child that’s not going to be independent (aka needing some support), you’ll likely want to apply for ELIS as it’s the only way to access supports in pre-kindergarten. More on that later this week…

Before we get started on our “navigating the education system” journey, I wanted to pop this quote out there. I don’t think there is a single person out there in Saskatchewan feeling like our current education system is working well, and I want to head into this discussion with a lot of gentleness for all involved - whether this be the kids, the parents, the teachers, the specialists, the administrators, or educational assistants.

That being said like and follow to help equip yourself with information about special education resources and more during the following series. We’ll be starting with pre-kindergarten programs in Saskatoon.

A couple things to note before we start:

👉🏻Given the changing nature of funding in the education system - the resources mentioned are subject to change. They are to the best of my knowledge at this time. I have reached out to different people in different systems, but things are changing ALL the time.

👉🏻I’ve done my best to round-up the options and information. That being said, I don’t know everything, so I may miss a program or adaptation. Let me know! I love learning and don’t mind being wrong when it means I can help more people.

Our Story

In 2014, Chatelle Cory founded Speech Therapy Saskatoon, a private speech and language pathology clinic, out of a desire to create an environment where toddlers, children, adolescents and adults could achieve speech and language success. Since then, Speech Therapy Saskatoon has grown to include five therapists, offering access to therapy services seven days a week. We believe in a family-centered approach and work in conjunction with our families to help them navigate community services when appropriate. We take pride in building rapport and trust with our clients and, in so doing, are fortunate to be able to create long-lasting connections with them.
