Detoxing isn't a fad. It's gaining in popularity because we're bombarded daily by many toxic substances, far more than our body is equipped to do without some extra support.
A body overwhelmed with toxins simply doesn't function properly and is one of the main reasons people don't feel well. (Even when your doctor says "everything is fine" and "your labs are normal" - they're just not looking for the right things!)
Our liver needs extra support of course, but as those toxins are being prepared to get eliminated, your gut function and what you eat play a major role in eliminating these substances.
You've all heard, "eat more fibre" but many people don't eat anywhere near the 25-40g daily recommended. Different fibres serve different roles, like sweeping the GI, can bind some wastes, and other fibres feed your microbiome, to name a few.
This research study looked at a type of fibre not often talked about, beta-glucans. It's found in mushrooms, oats, and some seeds and forms a gel-like consistency in your gut. (It's most known for help in lowering cholesterol, a whole different story.)
So if you're on a mission to better health, lowering your toxic load by avoiding exposure and helping your body eliminate them are good areas to focus on.
Here's the link to the research if want to geek out on the science details of how the mushroom and oats beta-glucans were studied to help eliminate PFOAs and PFAS found in non-stick pans, stain-resistant materials, in tap water, and some cleaning products. https://rdcu.be/ep0d0
It's a good idea to ditch those non-stick pots and pans and switch to stainless steel, oven-proof glass, cast iron, and ceramic bakeware and reduce your exposure. Make sure you've got a good water filter system too. Eating small amounts of oats and mushrooms daily might be very helpful as well.
