In Mediation, we often use the Social Needs acronym SCARF to identify people's unmet needs:
S - Status/Standing
C - Certainty
A - Autonomy
R - Relatedness
F - Fairness
When one of these needs is threatened, folks find it hard to empathize with one another and reach consensus - through recognizing the unmet need the parties can develop healthy strategies to meet their individual and shared social needs.
