Exercise Tip - Prayer Stretches

Our hands and wrists work tirelessly every day — typing, scrolling, lifting, treating, and cooking. Over
time, these repetitive movements can cause tightness in the wrist flexors and extensors, leading to
discomfort, reduced flexibility, and even nerve compression.

Two simple yet powerful stretches — the Prayer Stretch and Reverse Prayer Stretch — can help restore balance, flexibility, and comfort to your forearms, wrists, and even shoulders.

Benefits:
1. Improves wrist flexibility and forearm mobility.
2. Reduces tightness from long hours of typing or manual work.
3. Enhances circulation and decreases fatigue in the hands.
4. Encourages median nerve mobility through the carpal tunnel.
5. Stretches both flexor and extensor muscle groups of the forearm.
6. Reduces tingling, stiffness, and forearm tightness from repetitive use.
7. Improves functional hand positioning for daily activities.

How to Perform
Start Position:
> Sit or stand tall with shoulders relaxed.
> Bring both hands in front of your chest at shoulder level.
> Touch palms together (like a prayer), fingers pointing upward.

Move to reverse prayer Position:
> Gently rotate wrists so that the backs of your hands come together in front of you, fingers
pointing downward.
> Keep elbows at shoulder level, forming a diamond shape with your forearms.
> This position flexes the wrists

Flow between the Two:
> Slowly alternate between Prayer (extension) and Back-of-Palms (flexion) positions.
> Move gently through the range without forcing.
> Perform 8–10 slow repetitions, breathing steadily.
> Hold each end position for 3–5 seconds if comfortable.
> Can be done during work breaks, especially after long typing or manual tasks.

Precaution.
> Avoid overstretching or forcing the position, especially if you have acute wrist injury,
inflammation, or nerve compression.
> If you feel numbness, tingling, or sharp pain, stop immediately and consult a physiotherapist.
> Perform both stretches gently and consistently — gradual mobility gains are safer and more
lasting than aggressive stretching.
