In January, we welcomed five cats as part of our partnership with S**T Street Cat Rescue. These cats were in need of loving care, and our entire Sherbrooke community stepped up to help in many different ways!

Alison Fox gives us an update on how our five fosters are doing and offers gratitude for all of your help!

We love this story!

Before they left to present at the The Eden Alternative International Conference in Atlanta, Christy and Eric asked Elders, staff, students, families and volunteers to sign a Saskatchewan Roughriders flag. They brought the flag with them to Atlanta and worked it into their presentation when discussing our trips to Regina to cheer on the Roughriders.

Christy and Eric asked the audience how many kilometers, round-trip, it is from Saskatoon to Regina. The correct answer was 500 kilometers, and it was given by Roni Spears Anderson who works at Redemption House in La Vergne, Tennessee!

We hope you enjoy this little bit of Sherbrooke and Roughrider pride in your home, Roni!

We were excited to host our friends from 25th Street Theatre last week as the theatre company performed their new play, 'What If', in the Tawaw Centre!

The children's play tells the story of Nicky who wakes up with knots in her stomach and worries in her brain. Her daily routine is interrupted by a new kid named Milo, whose adventurous spirit helps Nicky come out of shell.

Elders, students, staff and families really enjoyed the play, which is being performed in elementary schools across Saskatchewan this month. After the performance, the actors held a theatre workshop for iGen students, which will no doubt help them when they perform their musical in May!

A big thank you to the 25th Street team for choosing Sherbrooke to perform a dress rehearsal of the play. We love hosting live theatre and encourage everyone to see the play when it is performed at the Nutrien Wonderhub on April 3rd and 4th!

We were honoured to attend this year's Eden Alternative International Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme of the conference was "In Unity, We Thrive" and we were able to connect with people from around the world and learn how they are bringing full and abundant life to their respective care homes.

Sherbrooke's Kim Schmidt, Suellen Beatty, Christy Norrish and Eric Anderson represented Sherbrooke at the conference and presented to attendees. Kim and Suellen delivered two presentations: "Staff Empowerment Using the Eden Alternative Domains of Well-being" and "The Magic of Children and Elders - Creating an Intergenerational Community."

Christy and Eric's presentation was entitled, "Unimaginable Experiences - Dreaming Big in Recreation."

All three presentations attracted a lot of attention, and it was exciting to share Sherbrooke's story with people from places such as Denmark, Iceland, and Australia.

Kim and Suellen were also interviewed for a documentary on the Eden Philosophy of Care while Christy and Eric appeared on an American podcast discussing the role recreation plays in the lives of Sherbrooke Elders.

Kim, Suellen, Christy, and Eric also attended sessions on topics such as leadership and empathy, using dance to create belonging and purpose, and the role Lego can play in creating community in long-term care homes (Eric is very excited about bringing Lego to Sherbrooke!).

The conference ended with an inspiring talk from Eleanor Hamby and Dr. Sandra Hazelip who became international stars by travelling around the world in 80 days at the age of 80! They are rock stars and Kim managed to take a photo with them!

We want to thank everyone at The Eden Alternative who worked so hard to host this conference! It takes so much planning and dedication to do something like this, and we are grateful for it because it allows our organization to connect with other Eden homes and be inspired by the work they are doing.

We wanted to remind all Sherbrooke Community Centre visitors and volunteers that they are required to register/sign-in their vehicle each visit with Platinum Parking by scanning a QR Code with their smart phone and following the prompts on the Platinum Parking website. Instructions for how to register/sign-in your vehicle using the QR Code are available in the YouTube video below and are available in a brochure at our front desk.

Parking is free for visitors and volunteers.

Our goal with this QR Code registration system is to ensure visitor parking spots are being used by visitors and volunteers. All unregistered vehicles who are parking in visitor parking spots will receive tickets issued by Platinum Parking.

QR Code signs are posted near the front entrance of Sherbrooke and the entrance to Veterans Village. There is also be QR Code signage inside our building.

Visitors who visit Sherbrooke on a very regular basis, or do not have use of a smart phone, can fill out a Visitor Parking Application Form. Forms are available in the Business Office. Completed forms should be brought to Brenda Villenna in our Business Office. These regular visitors will not have to register through the QR Code when they visit once this form is completed and given to Brenda.

In this episode, we are taking you to Second Neighbourhoods to learn about Sherbrooke’s Neighbourhood Developers and Friends program. This program sees Sherbrooke managers and staff who are not involved in the daily care of Elders spend time in a specific neighbourhood or house at Sherbrooke to help staff create opportunities for Elders, families and staff to come together and create community.

Hopefully by the end of this episode, you will learn why creating opportunities for Elders to get to know each-other is so important for us at Sherbrooke, and how Neighbourhood Developers and Friends help to make these opportunities happen.

You can listen to Welcome to Sherbrooke episodes wherever you find your favourite podcasts including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
