Our Story
Group Health Centre is committed to supporting a lifetime of care for our patients, from cradle to cane. We are home to 80 primary and specialty care physicians, 11 nurse practitioners, over 100 nurses, 33 allied health professionals, and over a dozen clinical programs that play a vital role in the health of over 80,000 patients in the Algoma district, and make this type of care possible.
Group Health Centre was founded in 1963 by thousands of Sault Ste. Marie steelworkers as one of the first union-sponsored community health centres in Canada. It promised its members no out-of-pocket costs at a time before provincial health insurance existed, for both primary and preventative care. The Centre has since been a leader in medical innovation, pilot projects and studies, winning National Best Practice Awards, being one of Canada’s top ten models of healthcare, and was referred to as “Canada’s best kept health care secret” by Roy Romanow, Commissioner for the Future of Health Care in Canada.
