Strawberry Ceremonies/Memorials take place on February 14, observed as a day to gather in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit people (MMIWG2S+).

A day to remember those whose lives were taken or remain unaccounted for, while demanding action to confront the ongoing, systemic violence that contributes to this genocide, and the significant gaps in implementing the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into MMIWG.

This movement began in 1992 in remembrance of Cheryl Ann Joe, a shĂshĂĄlh Nation mother who was murdered in East Vancouver.

Today holds space for collective grief and love, while reaffirming the call for justice, accountability, and support for families and survivors.

Did you know the first Women’s Memorial March in Vancouver was held on February 14, 1992?

The march began in the Downtown Eastside as a grassroots response to the murder of an Indigenous women. What started as a small group of grieving family members and local women has grown into a powerful annual movement to honour the lives of MMIWG2S+ individuals and demand justice.
