This is Bill, one of our part-time funeral assistants.

Bill retired from Algoma Steel, where he spent 45 years in various departments. He finished his career as the acting chairperson of the Joint Health and Safety Committee in 2016. He has been with Northwood for a few years now and has been a welcome addition to the team.

Bill says that he enjoys being a part of such a professional and compassionate team.

The Algoma Autism Foundation is back with their annual 'Trunk or Treat' event happening in OUR parking lot on Saturday, October 18 from 1 - 3 pm! This fun and interactive event is available to children/youth with autism and special needs (and their families) so they can experience trick or treating in a safe and quiet place. As Thanksgiving approaches, we know this season can be especially difficult for those who are grieving. Holidays are often filled with traditions, family gatherings, and memories of loved ones who may no longer be with us.

If you’re navigating this season while missing someone special, here are a few gentle ideas that may help:
- Light a candle in memory of your loved one during Thanksgiving dinner.
- Share a story or recipe that reminds you of them.
- Create a list of things you are thankful for (even simple things, like a warm cup of tea or the kindness of a friend).
- Give yourself permission to say no to certain traditions if they feel too heavy this year.
- Most importantly, be gentle with yourself. Healing doesn’t follow a calendar, and however you spend the day is valid.

From all of us at Northwood Funeral Home, please know that you are not alone. Our thoughts are with every family navigating this season with both love and loss in their hearts. 💙🍂

🧡 Today, on Truth and Reconciliation Day, we pause to honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never came home.

This day is not just about remembrance—it's about truth, learning, and taking action.

Let’s commit to learning the history, supporting Indigenous voices, and building a future rooted in respect, equity, and truth.🧡

Self-Care September 🍁

As mentioned in one of our previous posts, this time of year can be difficult for many. At Northwood, we know that caring for others begins with caring for yourself. Here is a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and prioritize your well-being. 💙

Self-care doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. It can be as simple as:
- Enjoying your morning coffee without rushing
- Taking a short walk in nature
- Reading a book that inspires you
- Reaching out to a friend just to say hello
- Taking a moment for quiet reflection

Grief, stress, and life’s challenges can feel heavy. It’s okay to take time for yourself!

It's the first day of fall! 🍂

It's hard to believe it's already that time of year. This is a difficult time for many as signs of fall and winter and can bring a sense of sadness or emotional weight, especially for those who are grieving. Seasonal depression is common, and the shift toward shorter, cooler days of staying inside can make feelings of loss and loneliness feel heightened or more intense. Whether you’ve recently lost someone or are navigating ongoing feelings of loss and stress, you’re not alone.
