FACT OR FANTASY? Weighted vests …

Weighted vests = 🏋️ strength ✔️ / ❌ proven falls

🦺 What about weighted vests for fall prevention?

Weighted vests can be a great training tool. They help build leg strength, balance, and even support bone density when added to exercises like walking, squats, or step-ups.

✨ But here’s the key: the science doesn’t show that wearing a vest on its own prevents falls.

Think of it this way: a weighted vest can add challenge to your workouts — but it’s not a shortcut or magic fix. The strongest protection still comes from:

✅ Balance + strength training
✅ Reviewing your medications
✅ Eye and vision care
✅ Supportive shoes + safe home environment

This summer felt different. Growing kids with changing priorities. Caught me off guard, almost wishing to go back in time. But looking through the memories helped ground me in staying in the present. Being with the kids and family where we are at now. It’s different. It’s changing seasons. Just sitting in the pre-teen feels and breathing in…and out…
Remember if you’re feeling down, journaling the good moments gives you that boost of serotonin, and the re-reading or seeing the good stuff is another boost later. That’s why gratitude journaling works so well. 👌🏼

Share your favourite summer moments below for a boost 😃 👇🏼

It’s a conversation. It’s options. It’s getting relief from symptoms affecting quality of life. It’s learning what’s important to you now and in the future.

Coffee. Checking EMR for nursing and ward updates. Start with the sickest patients and the new consults. Back to the office for some charting and phone calls.
Palliative care work makes up about 40% of my work right now and I’ve been part of the inpatient consult team for about 2 years now, and so thankful to work with the amazing palliative doctors and nurses that are my colleagues. It’s truly a team sport.

When the sun finally shines… I’ve been feeling very swirly this weekend, which is my way of describing the tornado of thoughts in my head, not specifically anxiety, not specifically irritability, just too much. Too many things on the go and a general feeling of overwhelm.
I’m much better at catching these feelings early and doubling my interventions. I meditated this morning, stretched, laid off the coffee and found a (small) spot of sunshine on the deck that wasn’t covered in snow still (! !) for an afternoon rest.
I stand with all the parents on the Sunday feelings 😅.

Friday Mornings. Most of us left tornados in the wake of our departure for one hour of sweet bliss of selfish self care time. Thanks to these anything goes ladies for a great pre-work sweat. Progress, not perfection. Keep moving the body.

The “Perfectly Imperfect” Day
🌈 Some days I’m a wellness guru. Other days I eat cereal for dinner and call it a win. Today I forgot my laptop and didn't pack a lunch, but got for a late afternoon treadmill walk with some weights and a good protein smoothie before the kids got home. Keeping your brain healthy is a marathon of choices and commitments you make every day. Nothing will be perfect.
Remember: It’s about balance, not perfection. Even for doctors.

I recently listened to a Blinkist excerpt from the book "Raise your Game", by Alan Stein Jr., a performance coach, and it summarizes that self-awareness alone is not enough. Discipline is what turns this appreciation into action. High functioning performers build systems and pay attention to the fundamentals.

Want to start exercising? Are you creating the dedicated time, are you making it easier to start exercising than to not exercise. I notice hubs at home will immediately change from work clothes to gym clothes to remove any extra step to delay or distract from the workout. Short on time? Some workout is better than no workout, even 6-10 min of a boost in heart rate or a quick stretch session can boost your focus and mood.

Who created the idea that we needed a dedicated 45-75 min space for working out? Just start, do something, be imperfect at it. I cannot count the number of times I procrastinated a workout because I spent 20 min working to create the "perfect" playlist only to conveniently run out of time for the actual workout 🤣 ... please tell me I'm not alone here!

New Year Check In 💕
I can’t quite say what has been preventing me from posting and sharing, we can say we are too busy, but really it means it wasn’t prioritized. In the messiness of day-to-day life, it is easy to push aside things like filling our own cup.

I have prioritized exercise, getting good sleeps, and keeping work boundaries in order to keep my mental health well.

I have a lot of doubt and self criticism about what I would even have to share on social media with others, and how it has been so long since I’ve been posting regularly that there wouldn’t even be an audience left to share with.

but all it takes is the first step, so I’m sending some energy out into the universe and look forward to posting more in the coming days and months about what has been helpful these past few years in keeping life on the level. Looking forward to more connections with all of you still here. 😃
