Do you ever wonder why some people get x-rays after an ankle sprain, but others are sent home from the hospital without them? It's likely because of the Ottawa Ankle Rules (OAR)

The OAR is a series of criteria a person has to meet in order to be sent for x-rays following an ankle injury. It is meant to reduce the number of unnecessary x-rays that have historically been done for this issue. This prediction rule is incredibly accurate (nearly 100%).

A person only needs to be sent for an x-ray if they have pain in the malleolar zone, and one or more of the following:

1. Bony tenderness in area A
2. Bony tenderness in area B
3. Inability to weight bear right after, or in the ER

There's a similar prediction rule for the foot, as seen on the right.

Have you been diagnosed with a disc herniation/injury? Good news! The body can heal itself, and a physiotherapist can help you to reduce pain and ease you back into your normal routine along the way! Of course, there are exceptions to this depending on the extent of the injury. But, physio is a great option for many.
